I've been reading about this concept (scout rifle) for a while and it seems to be bringing together several ideas that I've been rolling around for a while:
1st- I've been drinking the 358 win Kool-Aid for some time now as I just have this fantasy of using it for a spike gun in some timbered...
JohnD386,
That's gotta be tough! I'm really liking my wife's. I believe that the rifle's moniker is well deserved as it would make an excellent stalking gun. I found out that Savage chambers their model 11 Lightweight Hunter in the Creedmoor which I think would also make just about the perfect...
257 Ackley may have completely answered your question, but I took your meaning to be can you anneal too frequently. I too would be curious about that if anyone here knows the answer. As 257 Ackley indicated, it is possible to over-anneal on a single operation, but if you follow a correct...
Ended up getting some Hornady custom grade new dimension dies. Took them apart last night to clean/degrease them. Polished the seating sleeve and expander ball. Looks like they came with a standard and vld seating stem.
These are the first Hornady dies I've owned; any tricks to setting them up...
I'm a bit partial to the 150 PTs myself having used them to get first blood on my 284, a spike elk. They are proven performers that's for sure. I had a few loads that shot decent before settling on one that would put 5 in 3/4". Of course it could've been 3" and I'd have been just fine since I...
Thanks for all the info guys! I've been doing a bit of research on this as well and it sure seems like they made some good practical decisions in developing this cartridge.
Thanks for sharing your 130 AB results Scotty! Looks effective to me
I don't know what the opposite of buyer's...
It was a good day! Our 8 mo old daughter was sleeping in the pick-up and the dogs were in the back, enjoying the trip around the farm. The only thing that would've made it better was if it had been a tad warmer so the fingers didn't go numb quite so fast!
I will definitely be loading some 120...
That is one sweet setup on that custom creedmoor! I think the 130 AB would be a great hunting bullet for her, so I'll probably be working towards that.
Dr. Mike, how have you found uniformity to be with the Hornady brass?
I see that Midway has match ammo w the 140 A-Max. I may pick some up for...
Started break-in today! Got through the singles and a couple 3 round groups shooting the Hornady Superformance ammo w the 129gr SST. Last 3 round group did just a hair over an inch with 2 touching. Of course I let her have the first shot and then we switched back and forth (yes, she was generous...
Thanks guys,
I had a Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40 with rings so I picked up some Leupy bases for it for $20 and was good to go. I may change things up a bit if needed after I have the LOP shortened for her. She's a pretty short gal and 13.75" LOP is just a tad unwieldy for her. Feels awfully compact...
Grabbed my wife a Browning A-Bolt II in 6.5 CM so now I get to start loading for it! Seems like a pretty capable little cartridge.
As far as I know, Hornady is the only company manufacturing brass for it at this time. Is that right?
I'd be interested in hearing any experiences you guys have...
I've been looking for something in 260 rem for my wife's hunting rifle. Been watching online and 260 seems to be pretty popular as most guns chambered in it go for a fair penny. I had the chance to spend Saturday perusing some gun shops with a friend and in about the 4th store we go to he finds...
With only one rifle and one handgun to load for (probably need to jump on the RADD bandwagon) I use winters to play with bullets I've never tried before. And I switch from my big game load to coyote load.
Right now I have some 140 BTs that I'm playing with seating depth on, some 154 Hornady...
What issues have you seen with seating and crimping in the same step?
I'm just curious since I reload 40S&W on a dillon progressive press and have always used the taper crimp in the seating die to remove the slight bell produced during charging the case just before seating. Not sure that I...
When I switched to using MAP gas for annealing I used a bunch of brass that I had originally culled during case inspection to calibrate my timing in the hotter flame. I found that after ~4 seconds the job was done and I had a nice bluish band below the shoulder. When I switched over to my...
Not sure if your still researching but the RCBS Trim Pro 2 has some pretty good upgrades from the original. Micrometer adjustable trim length in .001" increments, universal shell holder so you don't need different shell plates and it comes with about 90% of the pilots that you'll probably ever...
My worst big game hunting experience involved shooting a young forked horn mulie at about 40 yds. This was the first or second year that I had hunted in the mountains (was maybe 14 at the time). I was using a 25-06 and I had stepped up on a log in some pretty dense stuff and there is a buck...
Switched from using Propane to MAP gas for annealing last weekend and I've gotta say, it is MUCH faster. I was using an 11 count with my Propane torch fitted with a pencil-flame style tip. With the MAP it is a 3 count and I get a nice blue band just below the shoulder and within a few seconds...
Thanks for sharing! You gotta respect a critter that chooses that for it's home.
Ibex are THE number 1 on my dream hunt list (would love to do Mongolia; looks wistfully into the future...)
Congrats to you both!
