I have had several mil-dot scopes that has had power ranges from 1.5x to 24x power. One should use 10x to determine range on a known size target, but, range can be obtained with any power if one likes additional...
This is the load that I had my barrel built around and to say that I've been pleased with its performance, both on game and at the range, might be a bit of an understatement :P
And of course as soon as I think I've got my ideal load they come out with the long range accubond which looks like...
Thanks guys. It was an awesome moment for us to share that is for sure. She shot her first deer ever (doe) 2 years ago and I think it's to the point now that I have to get her "her" rifle. I'm thinking a 243 would fit the bill nicely as she wants to hunt coyotes and deer as well as shoot at the...
160 AB @ 600yds.
Estimated impact velocity: ~1890fps
Retained weight: 123.6 or 77%
I had 5 jugs the first time around but I was holding high thinking it would drop down into the back jugs. Well, I hit high right on the shoulder and the bullet glanced off the shoulder of the 4th jug.
Second...
My wife's first buck.
Made an excellent shot at ~180 yards using my 284. The buck was quartering towards us and she drilled him on the point of the shoulder with a 160AB. More or less separated the top of the heart from the lungs and kept going right on out the other side. He ran about 30 yards...
Thanks guys. I talked with Kevin at stockade today and they quit making stocks inletted for the new savages with the detachable mag bottom metal due to inherent weakness in the design
I can either convert to a blind mag (same as some of the options on stocky's) or pay an additional $250...
This seems to be a general consensus from everything I've heard, but i feel like there are some companies out there that could give them a run for their money.
Thanks Richracer, I had been poking around on there a bit without much success and then tried using their search function a little...
I'm planning on treating myself to a stock upgrade for the 284. I'm looking at Mcmillan and Stockade (not many choices in aftermarket for the centerfeed Savages) and I'm having a hard time choosing so I need some advice.
Mcmillan only inlets the A-5 or HTG for the centerfeed DBM Savage actions...
I was noticing a similar effect shooting my handgun; groups were consistenly left and a bit high.
My finger naturally reaches much further than is necessary through the trigger guard, so I have to focus on placing it consistently. In addition, practicing with nothing but trigger control in mind...
My sentiments exactly.
I'm all for cutting down on steps, which is why i'm considering sending some brass to Lee to have them make a Collet Neck Sizing die for my 284 win.
No more neck lube baby!
IdahoCTD,
Thanks for sharing those pics. It's cool to see how others put together the different parts to make a custom rifle; I imagine building your own is a very rewarding experience!
I'm lovin my 284 win. It's a 24" Pac Nor #4, 3 groove, 9 twist on a savage model 10. I had mine built...
+1 for the 7mils! I think they are a great compromise between BC and bullet weight. Sure you can get a .6+ BC out of a 6.5 140 grain bullet, but when you want to do something bigger than mule deer, I think a 160 is a nice place to be. If you're looking at a short action 7mm I don't think you can...
With 51.5gr RL-17 I was hitting 2910fps, but getting slight pressure signs every once in a while so I backed these off to 50.8 and out of the 9 that I shot yesterday I didn't see anything to suggest high pressure and it jives pretty closely with what quickload says. I didn't chrono the 9 at 50.8...
Thanks for sharing guys; I love stuff like this! RR, I've seen what you described a lot where 3or 4 make a tight cluster with one or two out of place. Sure enough those outlyers can often
be brought to heel w a seating depth adjustment.
Finally got around to shooting 160ABs in my 284, which is what I originally intended to shoot with it! After a few charge variations I settled on 50.8gr RL-17 and decided to look at seating depth. The top group (2.983" COL) is what I had done my initial testing at and is pretty much exactly what...
Spent this morning at the range with the same scope and I agree completely w you ITH. First groups that I shot with it were a seating depth progression with my 284. I'll post those pics in "reloading" and some pics and comments on the scope in optics.
+1 for a thanks to the moderators. The...
Quenching them is not "bad" and MAY be unnecessary.
Quenching serves to keep the base of the case from getting too hot if you don't heat it hot enough fast enough and also helps prevent you from accidentally grabbing a still hot case if you're not paying attention.
Quenching requires that your...
A few comments in addition to Bill and Jake's:
+1 for having great clicks on those turrets. I'm also a pretty big fan of the knurling style they used on the knobs.
On top of a 20MOA base with LOW rings, I've still got a good 5/16" clearance between bell and barrel
Vortex was not shy on the...
