The barrel I had Pac Nor make for my 284 is a 24" #4. If that is the size of Benchmark you're getting I think you will be very pleased with it, from a weight/size standpoint. I think it is a great compromise between rigidity, weight and length. Of course, having a 35 cal hole through it will...
According to an Idaho FFA member's speech at the Oregon state convention last weekend it was much higher. I believe the number she quoted was approximately 48,000 for the Yellowstone herd before the wolf reintroduction program began.
I'm interested to see whether Idaho's management plan is...
Pretty much exactly what I do but I swish the case neck in water for a second while it is still in the chuck then shake it out a bit, keeping it upside down the whole time, then drop it. I guess the water just makes me feel better that the 700 degrees at the shoulder doesn't move too far down as...
I should be able to log a little range time with it next weekend so I'll post some more thoughts/critiques/praise as warranted after I've punched some paper w it.
I went ahead and grabbed one. It should be here by wednesday and if anyone is interested I'll post a few pics and some initial impressions when it gets here and I get it mounted.
Just to clarify: You received some 284 cal brass that had been neck turned, with a gun chambered in a 257 wildcat? And then you neck sized the brass down to 257?
If this is the case, I doubt that your necks are too thick. I don't think being too thick usually leads to cracked necks anyways...
Having never played much with the partition before this last year I have fast become an admirer. It might not be all new fangled or carry a BC to boast about but as others have already said, it gets the job done, whether it's 30 yards (this years spike elk) or 300. If I get to feeling my oats I...
Same load at 300 yds.
Est impact velocity: 2388fps
Retained Weight: 110.2 or 73.5%
Expanded Diameter: .700 or 2.5X caliber
Penetration: ~30"
Obviously I didn't shoot these while they were on the tailgate  Left a dimple on the back wall of the last jug; same as at 100 which I found...
I just looked at Berger's site via nvbroncrider's link and was really surprised to note that the range of bullet weights in 7mm covered a paltry 12 grains compared to the vast array of bullet weights in .308 spanning 120 grains, or over twice the weight of the lowest weight offering in that...
I don't usually weight sort either, I just did it out of curiosity as these were seconds and were supposed to be match bullets. I'm thinking of loading the two groups seperately and seeing if I can even see a practical difference within my shooting capabilities.
If I'd payed full price I might...
So I was weight sorting the remainder of the 162 amax factory blems that I used during break in last night and noticed an interestin pattern. I can't graph it on this computer, but out of the 54 that I weighed I'd guess that over 90% fell into one of two categories. 159.6-160.4 and 162-162.5...
Found him on the last day!
150 NPT @2950fps from the 284 win. approx, 40 yards broadside (thanks to some well timed cow calls from jmad). Through and through with excellent internal damage. Meat loss was minimal.
An Ibex hunt is at the top of my "hunt of a lifetime" list. Both the animal and the terrain they inhabit look like they'd be tons of fun to hunt. Congratulations!
I too would enjoy any other details that you would care to share.
[wipes drool from his chin]
Everyone in Oregon that wants more wolves and fewer hunters should have to watch this slideshow. Mother Nature can be very harsh yet many people think that getting shot by a hunter is inhumane.
Coyote taking a dirt nap after eating an elk load. Shot all my BT's at the range so he got a PT!
First kill with the 284
Way to go Corbin, those are some dandy lookin Mulies!
