I've happily existed within the ballistic limits of the 308 win since I was 18. Since I shoot maybe 3-4 bullets/year at big game, 3X that at coyotes/crows/etc, and several hundred at targets all out of one gun, I prefer an accurate, mild recoiling mid velocity (sub 3k for the most...
Here's a little anecdotal evidence for you:
130 TTSX in a 308 win w 20" bbl. MV 3000. Same load I've killed deer and antelope with.
Shot a young 5 point bull elk at about 200 yds. He was broadside and I hit midway down a couple inches behind the shoulder. The bullet passed clean through...
Some of my favorites are family stories too 1Shot. I particularly enjoy the stories that my Grandpa has told me over the last few years. He is not so lucid anymore, but luckily my brothers and I had the chance to hunt with him for a few years before for wasn't able to go anymore. He and his...
Pretty much what others have said for load testing/sight in:
Front and rear bag, rifle settled in so if I let go the POA doesn't shift much if at all and try to be consistent in everything from shot to shot. I haven't found much difference in groups between holding firm with my trigger hand or...
Just a little update on the 284 project.
First off, thanks onesonek and DrMike for the pm's.
After a bit more deliberation (on top of the several months worth that I had already done  )
and a few conversations with some knowledgeable people I called Pac Nor and specified the tight neck...
Here's the setup in the drill. Feed it on and off the turning mandrel nice and slow and it works great.
1st loaded round! 162 A-Max(thank you midway blemished sale) over 50 gr H100V. WLR primer, 2.978 COL. As you can see, I'm almost out of bearing surface; those 162's in the 284 short action...
Hey Sponxx,
I'm relatively new to the forum as well and like you was a bit of a minimalist when it comes to the personal arsenal. Let me tell you, a few months here and you will have a hard time finding a gun/cartridge that you wouldn't like to own! It's contagious I tell ya
To echo...
Thanks onesonek, if I can get accuarcy like that I would definitely consider it worth the price!
It helped alot in my decision that Jake and a few other serious shooters that we know have used Pac Nor in the past with great results. I did look into Benchmark a little and emailed them with...
Perfect! I still have one of the dummy rounds that I sent in with my order so I can use it for reference. I'll definitely post some pics when I get some loaded up! Had Hogdon send me their load data for H100V and H4831sc so I guess I'll start with those.
Ya Jake's build was the inspiration...
So I just got my new Lee 3-jaw chuck from Midway set up with the drill chuck adaptor. Got the neck turner adjusted for my 284 win (trimming to .0155 wall thickness) and trimmed up a few practice cases with the cordless drill set on low speed. Brought my variation from about .0012 to more like...
Joel,
I would add my vote for the 180 partition. I think in your -06 it will have the perfect combination of fast expansion/frangibility from the front core to provide max tissue damage on a double lung shot without much bone contact, but still have the SD and the weight retention with the rear...
BallisticNut,
If you haven't already read it, I think you would really enjoy "Rifle Accuracy Facts" by Harold R. Vaughn.
He tests alot of the things you are curious about and presents the results in his book. There are some great high speed photos of muzzle blast in millisecond increments from...
Thanks for the info guys.
The cartridge I'm having a barrel made for is the 284 win, and from everything that i've read, with the 2.80" COL and 160 gr bullets you run out of case capacity before you reach max pressures with many powders. Most load data is generated using this 2.80 COL. My...
This is kinda what I was thinking too. It seems like a topic that frequently comes up when people are considering a new rifle or building a custom one, and I always wondered how much difference it would make from a practical standpoint.
Thanks,

How much does your COL have an effect on your chamber pressure and load velocity assuming your bullet position relative to the lands remains the same?
As I understand it, if you could have your rifle throated to allow you to seat your bullets out as far as possible (assuming your mag allows a...
Mike,
Always love hearin more about your work with the 358 win! You mention the generous magazine on that great looking hawkeye and I was just curious what your COL is with the 225 ABs in that rifle.
Thanks,
atm
Wow that is great to know! I buy stuff from Midway quite frequently and, as you mention, have always had great service. Nice to know that if for some reason I don't they'll make it right, even if it wasn't their fault! Can't hardly beat that!

A 180 at nearly 3200 fps (I'm guessing from your 300?) would be some potent medicine indeed! I can see the need for a tough as nails, controlled expansion bullet in that situation.
