.280AI New Rifle Build - Barrel Twist & Free Bore Question

Yeah, it seems almost perfect with respect to balance between ballistics, recoil and rifle dimensions. In Goldilocks terms this porridge is just right. Thx.

.280AI New Rifle Build - Barrel Twist & Free Bore Question

Your questions have prompted me to look more into the "hunting" heavy weights for .284 and there really aren't many great options above 165ish except for the partition. As Aussie Wanderer has pointed out the sweet spot may live in that middle weight range; therefore, I probably shouldn't be too...

.280AI New Rifle Build - Barrel Twist & Free Bore Question

I want to build a "big brother" to my current Tikka Lite in 7-08. I believe that I have decided on a Tikka action with a TBD brand barrel chambered in .280AI. I would like to have a 1/8 twist rate and longer free-bore to have the capability to use heavier bullets with higher BCs; however, I...

    cartridge or pistol brand snob

I have never shot a 45-70 BFR, contender or otherwise in 45-70 but my experience with the FA 454 may draw some parallels. In addition to factory rounds, I shoot a few different handloads, one with 240gn Hornady XTP Mag w/ a max charge of H110 and some 265gn Cast Performance WFNGC. I have also...

    cartridge or pistol brand snob

For me it has always been a matter of practicality. I see handguns, pistols in my case, as tools of the trade and could only carry what was issued. For everyday carry, I don't want to suffer from trigger, sight or function confusion between models, so I stuck with Glocks and Sigs. I never really...

    7-08 hunting load for 2026

Huge fan of the Barnes 120 TTSX in 7-08 and 130 TTSX in .308. I use CFE223 in my 7-08 and TAC in my .308. I assumed, incorectly, that TAC would be too fast in the 7-08. May have to give it a try...

What is the length of your son's barrel on his 7-08?

Weatherby Accumark Limited 6.5 Wby RPM

That's great projectile performance with respect to the velocity.

    somewhat impressed

I really like that Kimber. There is one for auction in 338 Fed at the moment. I have five of the older 84Ms and 8400s in various chamberings but no 338 Fed. Hmmm....

    Hunter powder in 243 win

I apologize that I can't answer your question directly, but I have used Hunter in my 7-08 loads with a 165gn Norma Bondstrike. Maybe there are some similarities? All of my groups were concentric and relatively small (.6s to 1.1s) with little idiosyncrasies. I also never experienced any pressure...

Hunting optics, What do you use?

As primarily a "Whitetail" hunter in the southeast, I tend to favor the low to mid-range power optics with a priority to clarity and weight. I used to think that my Leupold VX-3 2x8x32 was the perfect scope for me until I purchased and used their VX6HD in 2x12x42 w/the Fire Dot. It may not win...

    243 Winchester again

The first deer I ever killed was in Greene County GA with my dad's Sako L57 in .243 Win. I believe that it was made in the mid-fifties. 1957 would seem pretty logical I suppose... I won't part with that rifle. Those are some great pictures and look like fun memories.

    Another trip to the Range

These are some of my Rem 700 LTR groups with Barnes 130gn and TAC. Again, I'm pleased with the velocities but still have some work t do. My Bergara loves that specific recipe. My LTR traditionally seems to prefer 165gn-175gn range. The group on the left is actually a 5 shot group but one fell...

    Signess- I've got it bad

I carried the Sig P229 in .357 Sig professionally for 23 years and then we transitioned to Glock 19. I really like both, but it took a little getting used the different style triggers (DA/SA vs striker). I own a P229 in 357 Sig and P232 for summertime carry when I was only authorized to carry...

    Another trip to the Range

@highoctane - Get fling any of those new NOS 150 BTs? I had great weather here too in VA, so I went to the farm on Sunday to clear some fallen trees and test some new loads in the Tikka 7-08 and Rem 700 LTR in .308 Win. For the past few years, I have favored going with the light for caliber...

Woo Hoo! LEOSA Qual for 2026 is complete

In VA they record make, model and serial number but don't care which one or how many. Depending on my mood, I alternate amongst various Glocks that all have the identical mode of operations. I don't qualify with or carry weapons with drastically different triggers or cycle of operations. I think...
