I put in for muzzleloader hunts for deer, elk and antelope this year and didnt draw any of them. My kids will get muzzleloader tags for antelope thanks to their mom and grandmother. Parents or grandparents can transfer tags to their children or grandchildren up to 17 years of age here in ID.

I used TC Maxi Hunters, I think they were called, and Buffalo bullets. The TC's are a pre-lubed solid lead bullet.

For that I'd use proven components like a Brux barrel. It may not be much cheaper to build your own but knowing what components are used would make me feel a lot better about spending 2K plus for a muzzleloader.

If I wanted a cheap barrel I'd do a Wilson from Ragged Hole Barrels. All of the ones I've used where pretty accurate with one being exceptional. I havent been overly impressed with the Douglas barrels I've used. I'd personally spend a bit more and do a top tier barrel like Brux, Bartlein or Krieger.

I would try again with 3 shot groups and throw in another box or two different ammo. Browning rifles tend to have very thin barrels and will heat up fast. There arent many times you'll need to shoot more than 3 times elk hunting.

Prefit barrels for Mausers dont exist because the consistence isnt there from action to action. There are some short chambered barrels around for Mausers and you can rent a reamer + headspace gauge and finish ream it yourself but you need a action wrench and barrel vice to do it all.

If the barrel isnt going to be kept you can take a parting tool to the barrel next to the action and get most any barrel off, even if rusted up. If that doesnt work you can cut the whole barrel off and bore out the shank inside the action until its paper thin and peel the rest out. Personally...

I have a reamer, action, stock, etc to build the same thing when I get a barrel. I would focus on the slowest powders like N570 and Retumbo but N565 and H-1000 would work as well.

I was just going to say go full custom and groups like that arent uncommon. Smaller calibers with less recoil tend to shoot better too.

I have 2 BPS 10's and a SP-10. I killed tons of ducks with the BPS's in the early steel shot days. I shot quite a few slugs and buckshot through them, its nasty.
