CJ, all the speculation about bullets doesn’t matter if you can’t afford to shoot regularly and learn your rifle inside and out. A non premium bullet in the hands of someone who understands their rifle will be better than a bloke who never goes to the range and believes the bullet will do the...
I recently took 2 fallow does with one shot using the 165sst out of my 30-06, so no issues there.
I have used the 139sst out of a 7mm08 on big pigs and red deer with no issues.
I've skim read most of the replies and PJ noted that he waits for his barrel to cool down. I was actually wondering how fast you were going through the strings. We have a couple of rifles that after the first three shots will open up a little, unsurprisingly all are magnums. Time between shots...
Honestly in a 308 shooting small deer, you are not likely to stress a bullet enough beyond what a BT can handle. I have shot countless deer with the 120BT out of a 260rem and a 150BT out of a 7mmRM. Stuff just isn't that hard to kill if you put the bullet in the right place. I think the BT range...
Hunted a couple of weeks ago for Fallow deer. Conditions for the farmer were borderline drought conditions so competition from deer for their stock is not appreciated right now. Thankfully the day after we left they got about 18mm (3/4 inch) which would have been very helpful, particularly where...
The old 30-06 got me a first last weekend. 2 fallow does with one shot. I was never a fan of the 30-06 I always shot the 7mmRM and then the 280ai. I have grown fond of the cartridge and its accuracy which surprised me how good it was. Varget was the key with 165 grain bullets for me too.
Heading down to the range this afternoon for a quick fowling of the barrels and make sure everything is running as it should before the weekend. The fallow better be careful, my sons 270 and the old 30-06 look prime. Seems kinda cool that I shoot the 06 and he shoots its offspring. No excuses...
Great rifle and very cool cartridge. Another one of the green machine's marketing failures. If I had just one cartridge for where I shoot and it was a 7SAUM, I'd be a happy camper...the game, not so much ;-)
PJ, Gotta work with what you got. Would love to hear that you got out for a hunt again. I am trying to get my 80 year old Dad back in the bush for our deer season next year. It will be good for his soul...and selfishly mine too. I owe the man more than I could ever repay. He has been a wonderful...
Not really sure as I don't know the game or the type of terrain. Some of the places I hunt fallow is really thick, but perhaps not jungle like.
In no way was I suggesting your methods were wrong, inferior or anything else, just what I really enjoy doing. I get a lot of satisfaction from...
Spot and stalk all the way. Doesn’t matter the game or whether rifle or bow. I love leaving camp with a pack on my back and a sense of anticipation and optimism. I love the weight of a pack full of meat walking back into camp, getting it squared away and the satisfaction of plonking down into a...
What a crazy story. Glad you are all safe and getting better. With all of those injuries it seems silly to say how lucky you are, but damn the exit stage left hook was surely swinging. Get well soon.
This might help with some of your thinking. I chose the Hornady stuff for simplicity just because it is in their calculator and typically shoots okay. I ran the 150eldx at 3,000fps, the 162eldx at 2,900fps and the 180eldm at 2,700fps. Figured they were all around the mark, allowed for a 200m...
