Surprisingly, Winchester is referring to African game (Lion/leopard).
I was wondering about that. Thanks for the info. The BT would make an interesting elk load in that case.
A 160-170 grain BT in .323.
There are a lot of non-mag (mauser) whitetail hunters shooting 150 to 170 grains.
Keep the more durable 180 grain BT for the 8mm Rem Mag and .325 WSM guys.
I would also like to see Nosler compete directly with some of the other bullet makers and offer some some 8mm bullets in the 170-grain range for us non-magnum guys.
Ultimately, the 8mm offerings could really mirror what is offered in 30 caliber, but I guess that is asking a lot.
It doesnt't...
I had some 196 grain bullets available, so I made up some loads with IMR 4064.
I was able to get 47.5 grains to average 2569 fps.
I tried 48 grains and got 2597 fps, but that was really pushing the pressure ceiling in my rifle. I would not recomend that load.
I have noticed that the load...
I have shot one deer with the Berger 168 grain VLD (30-06). They do make small entrance holes. I made one quartering shot that did not exit and finished with a neck shot that left a exit hole about the size of a quarter.
What is interesting is this deer did what some others on the thread had...
Cartridge : 8 x 57 mm Mauser (SAAMI)
Bullet : .323, 200, Nosler PART SP 35277
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.250 inch or 82.55 mm
Barrel Length : 22.0 inch or 558.8 mm
Powder : IMR 4350
The highest velocity I got for this load was 2665 fps. It was averaging around 2625 fps.
Thanks POP.
If I am reading things correctly, and I use the advertised velocities and your pressures, it should look like this:
Grains Vel Density Press Comments
46.0 2638 89.0 49475 Near Maximum
46.5 2662 90.3 51900 Near Maximum
47.0 2686 91.5 52500 Near Maximum...
Thanks POP. I will approach the top end slowly.
If you are still out there, could you run one more load through your program? I am interested in seeing where this powder will max out (58,200 psi):
Powder : IMR 4064
Grains: 46
Velocity: 2638 fps
Cartridge : 8 x 57 mm Mauser (SAAMI)
Bullet...
Thanks for the warning Pop! I know the US (SAAMI) lists the max pressure at around 35,000 P.S.I. due to the .318 rifles out there. I have a Remington Classic.
Accurate Powders uses European specs in their data and they say a newer .323 rifle can be loaded 58,200 P.S.I. So I should be ok...
I own a mint condition 8mm Mauser (.323). I have seen references to a Nosler load for a 200 grain partition with 52 grains of IMR4350 at a mv of 2698 fps on the internet. That is the fastest load I have seen listed for a 200 grain bullet in 8mm mauser. Is that info correct?
That load is...
