Some 30-06 ammo of the past

I don't know why Federal discontinued the Deep Shok ammo. It was accurate and performed well on deer close in woods shots and long range clear cut shots. I have one full box of 165gr and 4 rounds of 180gr left. For deer hunting in the timber where shots are 80 yds and less I like to use 180gr...

Some 30-06 ammo of the past

The Federal HE 180gr Partition chronoed 2920 fps. and the Speer Nitrex 180gr chroned 2770fps. The Nitrex box is missing 2 live rounds for one deer and one coyote. The Deep Shock 165gr ammo was quite accurate and worked well for deer.

165 Ballistic Tip vs. 165 Accubond

I used the solid base Noslers until the Ballistic Tips came out and have been steady using them. I tried the .308 Accubonds in 150gr. and 165gr. in my 30-06 for deer with good results but prefer the 150 gr. Accubond or 165gr. Ballistic Tip. I found the Ballistic Tips to be slightly more accurate...

    308 Loads

Varget is a good powder in the .308. I've had good luck with H-4895, Reloader-15 and IMR-4064. H-4895 is my most accurate powder behind 168gr. -175gr. SMK . Some folks have good luck with 2520, CFE 223 and 760.

    223 Pig Bullet

75gr Gold Dot law enforcement ammo shoots well in my ARs. This is what I'd use for hogs. Billy

“Hydrostatic Shock” or “Temporary Wound Cavity”

Nice picture! Lately the coyotes I've shot have been with the 30-06 using 165gr BTs during deer hunting. Most at close range with the coyotes ending up blown apart. I had shot one coming straight to me @ around 50yds. that made a loud pop. He was completely emptied. "Nothing left inside." Billy

    Store Bought Ammo

When I started hand loading it was to be able to afford to shoot more. Back then I mostly hunted with factory loads. Now I shoot mostly hand loads in my rifles including my ARs. I have found Nosler and Federal Premium ammo to be very accurate and wouldn't feel disadvantaged using it to hunt...

    6mm or 25-06??

I've had both and there's not much difference between them. For mostly coyotes and the occasional antelope the 6mm may be more fun. The 25-06 packs more punch along with more muzzle blast and recoil but the 6mm has a edge on accuracy. You have a better selection of 6mm and 6.5mm bullets that are...

    270 weatherby load development

The best load in my .270 wby was 75grs of Rx-25 behind the 150gr Hornady spire point for 3238 fps. This and the 150gr factory load were what I shot most of the deer with. The longest shot I made was 300yds and have only recovered one bullet. My rifle shot well with most 130-150gr flat base...

    Looong Throat Bullet Suggestions

I've found rifles with lots of free bore sometimes shoot best with bullets that have a long bearing surface like Hornady flat base bullets. The Weatherbys I had shot best with Hornady flat base bullets and didn't care for boat tail bullets. Billy

    30-06: Case Capacity Comparison

I never cared for Rem. brass or primers in the 30-06 but have had good luck with W-W/Hornady, Fed. and Nosler brass. I've had good results using WLR primers in W-W/Hornady and Nosler brass. I've had good results using Fed. 210 or 210M primers in Fed. brass. With the loads I'm using I don't see...

Shooting up last years hunting loads

The ABs worked well on deer but didn't seem to do as much damage as non bonded bullets. "Like shooting deer with a smaller caliber rifle." The exit hole was smaller and didn't leave as much blood. "Partitions make a bigger exit hole." I shoot my deer in the ribs and like the big hole the 165gr...

Shooting up last years hunting loads

I went to the range today to shoot up the left over hunting ammo. I had 8 rounds left of the 150gr AB I had hunted with last season. I had never used the AB and wanted to try them out. They worked well and I killed 3 deer with them but I'm going back to the 165gr BT that I have a new load for. I...

    Handloads and self defense

Most likely no one is going to be able to tell the ammo used was reloaded. If you have to use deadly force on a criminal that's about to kill you I don't believe the weapon or ammo matters. I keep my hand guns loaded with law enforcement ammo and my ar loaded with military sniper ammo. Billy

    Meopta Meopro....Zeiss Conquest?

I had a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50 that went bad. I was told the reticle was detached and couldn't be repaired. I have a Meopta 4.5-14x44 that looks a lot like the Zeiss . Optics are a bit above average but not in the same class as my Docter Unipoint. Billy

30-06 loading on a snowy day

I've been forced to find a different powder to replace H-4350. My old favorite load for many years has been 57grs H-4350 behind the 165gr BT. I found Vihtavouri N-550 to be just as accurate and cleaner. This will be my new favorite powder for my favorite bullet the 165gr BT. Billy

    2018 loading & shooting goals?

My goal was to find a replacement powder for the H-4350 no longer available. The last LB. of IMR-4350 I bought is nothing like the IMR a few years ago and I don't get the results with it I want. I've settled on Vihtavuori N-550 for my 30-06 165 gr load. The powder is not picky with 53-54grs...
