    Barrel twist

What got me to thinking about twist rates is I have a 22-250 and a 25-06 that both had standard twist for the time built but are too slow for some of the newer bullets. I am very pleased to see some high BC stuff coming out for a 25-06 but I don't think I can make use of them. Both of these are...

    Barrel twist

I have 40 year old custom rifles that have too slow of twist for some modern bullets. But who knew back then we would have todays bullets. So if building a new gun should a guy try to get close to 300,000? If 300,000 is the high side what is a good number for too slow?

    Barrel twist

I read a lot where folks are going to faster twist barrels to be able to shoot longer bullets. So what is the downside and how do you know the limit? I understand caliber plays a part as does velocity but are there guidelines?

    Where is Spring!

Speaking of lost spring here in Kasilof Alaska we are seeing 20 below almost every night. I am getting a little tired of it

    35 Whelen new loads

First off I do not mind other stuff coming up on a thread I start at all. Speaking of that I will do it myself. I got my Model 600 350 mag at age 12. The only thing ever shot through it was max 250 grain loads. To say that little 18 inch barreled thing kicked would be an understatement. At the...

    H4895 60% Load

I used H4895 at about 70% in a 30-06 Tika. I made the loads with 130 grain bullets. My reason was so those who wanted to shoot a larger round but not get beat up could ring steel at 100 and 200 yards. I have not run the loads over my chronograph but I have a four shot group my wife shot at 100...

    35 Whelen VS 375 Ruger

Despite having a father who owned a small gun shop and thus having access to any gun I wanted I have carried the 35 Whelen he built for me for the past 40 plus years. I load 250 grain Hornadys and have never had a problem. They did the job on everything from deer to 10 foot brownie at ten...

Winter time - Cabin Fever.. what to do

Chuck you might not have a 1600 yard range but yours is long enough and it is right at home! Also I note you are shooting in shorts and not Refridgerwear and that is worth a bunch. Nice day to shoot here today but it is only 6 degrees.

Winter time - Cabin Fever.. what to do

I have high hopes for this gun. My buddy/smith is a former world record benchrest holder so he shoots way better than me but after some break in rounds he shot two different loads for testing. Five shots into .471 and the other was 5 into .291 at 100yards. If I can make it do any where close to...

Winter time - Cabin Fever.. what to do

Happened to me just like it did to Joec. Found a cheep Remington 700 S/A ADL in 223 with an older 3x9 scope. Took it out and it did not shoot all that well and had headspace issues. Off to my smith for a new bull barrel, action work and a trigger job. Needed a stock and that needed bottom metal...

Winter time - Cabin Fever.. what to do

Building a fast twist 223 must be the thing to do. I am just finishing up one with a 24 inch barrel on a 700 action. I should say my friend/smith did the metal work and I am doing the rest. It will be a range toy just something to play with. Our range goes out to 1600 so it will be fun to see...

    SHOCKER

I find it almost impossible to get a straight answer when I ask how good is this DR. I always get "He is good" compared to who? The one is finished last in med school is still called Doctor. Just hope you do not get that "Good" one.

What did you use to kill your first deer?

Deer would be in my 30's with either a 35 Whelen or a 14 inch Contender in 7TCU. Not sure what was first as I used both on the same hunt. Big deer, Moose, would be 30-06 at age 11.

    This day 1969

I was13 but I am not sure TV was even available here in Alaska. If it was there was only one channel and it was taped and that was two week delayed. I know for darn sure our family did not have one yet.

    35 Caliber bullets Vs. Bear

35 Whelen with 250 grain Hornady at around 2400 fps has worked well for a bunch of deer, caribou, moose and about eight brown bears over the years. Unless one is shooting long range I see no benefit to higher speeds. In fact it seems to me those bullets are more likely to have failures at higher...

Swapping from Evinrude ETEC to Suzuki

I have a bunch of outboards from all the major brands so not brand loyal. I think all the major makers today all build good products. For me the most important thing is the local dealer. In this part of Alaska Suzuki is the clear cut winner. Just had them work on my 15 year old 9.9 kicker and...

Pole Barn Project (Updated with Pictures)

Just for my education how does the cost of a pole barn compare to building with 2X walls. I am thinking about the added cost when you want to have finished wall inside and outside. And you need backing of some sort to hang shelves off of. My shop is a metal building and over the years I have put...

Pole Barn Project (Updated with Pictures)

I like the floor heat well enough I did it in my house also. The only downside is it takes a while to make a temperature change. The upside is even at below zero when the power goes out it takes a while for the house to cool down. I have a Toyo heater that takes car of rapid temp changes.
