Primers backing out of fired cases, anyone seen this??

I had a P-17 with headspace questions, eleven thousand of them :) .I could by underloading ,shorten my cases and have the primers back out;more powder would leave the cases the same length with backed out primers, still more powder would stretch the case and leave a "normal"looking primer.Even...

    303 projies

From memory,Enfield rifling is five equal lands and grooves.Since it's odd number you can't just measure across.Spec call for grooves of .0055" and a bore of .303",what they are might be a different story.Military sights are set for a load,so to use them some guys then try to match the load.

    303 projies

Hornady 174 RN is the same weight as the sights are set for. It's also a .312" .Slug your bore, then add two of the grooves to 303.

    Vihtavuori N540 Powder

I tried N-550 in my 338.06,great, and a couple of 30.06 with 165, pressure signs and low velocity.I have a 8x57 parts at Bill Leeper's,but it's a backburner project.Viht Vouri has a lot of interesting 308 Data with N-550.Dave Freisen has it a fair price.

    Vihtavouri Powder

My loads for my 225gr 338WM,180gr 308Norma and 180gr 30.06 all use N-560.They say it's temperature insensistive. It needs a minmium pressure to shoot consistantly. So you end up with velocity, accuracy and moderate pressure.I like that combination. It also burns very clean. The down side is the fireball.

    338.06 loads ?

Thanks,if I don't have the data for that powder ,at lest I have max velocity to work up to.(RL 15) From the A-Square manual,I get a SAAMI max of 65,000psi,is that correct.

30/06 sprfld. primers wanting to back out.

Headspace for the 30.06: Go= 0.00",chambers rounds,No-Go= +0.006", it's time to fix,Field =+0.009",this is for wartime rifles. Headspace problems : It gives the case a running start against the lugs, not breaking them but worsening the problem. It chews brass, the case get stretched then...

30/06 sprfld. primers wanting to back out.

I have gone down that road with a P-17 ,a WW I 30.06,that could be your headspace. However if the load is very light your case might have shortened, measure before and after. At a moderate load the case will remain the same giving you an headspace number with the primer protruding. At a brisk load...

    POWDER SELECTION

The VihtVouri N-550 and N-560.Ever time I used N-560,my load development ends. There not much fun in that, like ending the party at 8:30.It sure would be nice to have some guidence at SAAMI pressure levels.

    338.06 loads ?

I going to load some 338.06 with 225 Accubond, hey they work great in my 338WM,and VihtaVouri N-550,which I also have.I shouldn't runout of room with N-550.a couple of questions What pressures were you using in your latest manual for the 338.06? Do you have any data with N-550 or can I use...

    WHAT ACCUBOND SHOULD BE NEXT?

The 6.5mm 140gr for the 264WM would be great. The sectional density of the heavier 6.5mm make penatration a given, not so for expansion with it's small dia. Thus you could get the reliable expansion without worry of blow-up.You don't always get long shots.
