Barrel whip vs harmonics and timing question

Im sorry, forgot to mention in the previous post. The 4.14" spread was at 100 yards. My daughter wanted to go shooting so I let her shoot the ladder test at 200 yards. So, the grouping of 1.08" was at 200 yards and shot by my daughter. As stated in a previous post as well, the same rifle...

Barrel whip vs harmonics and timing question

Just a quick note. Thanks for all the responses. I did try a slower burning powder as I usually would and conducted a ladder test. Using the 90% fill method mentioned below for a starting point, I was able to achive 1.08" spread on my last three rounds. That would be IMR4350 42.5, 43.0 and...

Barrel whip vs harmonics and timing question

Dubyam- THANKS! That was the most clarifying complete explanation I have heard to date. It makes me pause and wonder on how I can continue to improve on my testing processes. My only downfall in my testing that I can honestly state is that I do not weigh my brass and match brass weigts for...

Barrel whip vs harmonics and timing question

I hear ya on this one. I know my rifle and what it is capable of. I can put three through the same hole at 100 yards with one of my loads. This question was more about learning what will and will not cause bullet destabilization and what causes such a drastic difference between shots even...

Barrel whip vs harmonics and timing question

I use a digital scale and in one of the shot groups, the FPS tested the same on two shots but those two shots were the furthest apart in the shot group. In four shots, shot 1 3102 FPS, shot 2-3077 FPS, Shot 3-3102 FPS, shot 4-3092 FPS and shot 5 3099 FPS. Shot 1 and Shot 3 3.989" a part, this...

Barrel whip vs harmonics and timing question

I remember reading that if a powder burns too fast, it causing the expansion of gases to burst immediately after the bullet leaves the barrel, thus creating a turbelance that can cause the bullet to destabilize. This is an understandable phenom. If I understand this correctly, a slower burning...

Barrel whip vs harmonics and timing question

Ok, well not really. I understand barrel whip and harmonics. My question was more about fast burning powder causing a sonic disturbance behind the bullet as it exits vs a slower burning powder that has not fully expanded by the time the bullet departs the chamber. Barrel whip seems to cause...

Barrel whip vs harmonics and timing question

Ok, I am relatively new to reloading, going on my second year. I have a .300 WSM and .243 Winchester that I reload. I am obsessive as you can tell by my given nickname. I am trying to understand more about barrel harmonics and timing and pressure. Most of what I have found has been research...

    300 WSM 165grn loads.

I have done a lot of testing with the 165gr AB with RL-17 and couldnt get as tight of a group as I would have liked. Best recipe with the tigtest group was Nosler 168Gr BT, RL-17 64.5gr cci250 primers and federal cases. These shot better then the 165gr AB no matter what load formula I tried...

    Vortex scopes?

I have had issues with their Customer Service since the new CS Manager took over. She is not as customer friendly as the last guy. I ended up sending mine in for repair, they sent me a new replacement within about a week of recieving my old one back. No complaints there. The Viper seems a...

    Vortex scopes?

THought I would give you all an update. I have owned three Vortex scopes in the past year. First off the Crossfire series, had three fail on my .300WSM within 50 rounds. Figured it to be the recoil so I upgraded to the Viper (with MilDot). Absolutly loved it. Last April took it out to my...

Aftermarket Tikka 3 .300 WSM Mag for reloaders

Well, we hit a snag. My brother ended up in the hospital with a fused vertabrae. He had surgery a few weeks ago to repair but is out of work for a few months. This put all of his "pet" projects on hold. Ill post when I hear something new.

    Nosler .243/6mm 55gr. spitzers

Well, here is some additional info. I did some heavy load testing yesterday with some RL-15. I was able to achieve sub MOA at 200 yards and the consistancy was not quite what I had seen with the IMR4320. With RL-15 45.0gr I was getting average 4015 FPS my 6 shot group was just over 2". If I...

    Nosler .243/6mm 55gr. spitzers

Shooting my Weatherby .243 Winchester: I have had some great success with these just this past week. Right out of the Nosler Reloading manual, I loaded up some IMR 4320 and conducted a ladder test. What i found out was this is a great flat shooter. The book suggested 45.5 gr of IMR4320 with...

300 Wsm 180 grn Nosler Accubond load data

Something doesnt look right here. I use RL-17 with 66.9 gr, and get 3050 fps with a nosler 180 gr BT SP. Aliant's own reloading recommendations for the 180 gr and RL17 is 66.0 gr and it shows it produces 3082 fps. ?? :?:

    243 90gr Etip

Curious, why would you do a lands test prior to a powder ladder test?? Seems to me that you would set the round .10-.15 off the lands to start and work on powder loads. Then once you figure your zone, work on distance off the lands to bring your groups even tighter. Im no expert and have...

    RL 17 Powder

My .300 WSM with the Nosler AB is set at 66.9 gr of RL-17 Federal 215 primers and shooting sub MOA at 200 yards. My ladder tests showed decent grouping between 66 gr and 67 gr. My rifles sweetspot is the 66.9gr.
