    Western Oregon Cow

Took this cow the last week of February. Spotted the herd at about 800 yards, well outside my comfort zone. No matter, it was an easy stalk down and around a hill. I reacquired the herd at about 400 yards, ranged them, and dialed up my scope. I could have ended it right there, but the herd...

    Scope Upgrade

Cabalas is running a deal on the Leopold VX6 2-12. It's the one with Zero Lock, and duplex. I have an elk cow tag that starts this January, and I'm already dialed in with my VX3 3.5-10. I think I'll stay with that for this hunting season. Anyway, the VX3 will go on a rifle that currently has...

    Anyone mess with 4000 MR?

This is the suggested powder by Barns for a 280ai and the 168 grain LRX. They listed others, but this is what they said was most accurate. I did pick up a # for experimenting, but I think I've heard next to nothing about this powder. Do any of you use this powder for other cartridges?

ithaca model 37 ultra featherlight 20 gauge

Anyone know anything about these things? My (very kind) sister-in-law gave me this little gun. She has small kids, and wasn't really into firearms. I traced the SN to a build date of 1978. It looks great, with only a few wear marks on the blueing. I think it has an integral modified choke, but...

    280 Ack Imp QL Request

If someone has some free time, and would be so kind, could you please run some numbers for me? SAAMI 280 Ack Imp 24" barrel O.A.L. 3.420" Nosler brass, 66.806 grain H2O Reloader 26 Barns 168 grain LRX These bullets are just HUGE, and I'm a bit skeptical about using them. Thanks for your...

    8# kegs

I bought my first 8# keg of powder, and received it yesterday. I feel like a grown up now. That is RL26. Now I saw they have 8#ers of Varget available! I load 3 guns with that stuff, its tempting. My bank account needs to recover a bit though.

    Pac-Nor order specs

I'm about ready to place my order (maybe 2 weeks out), but never had a custom barrel done. I looked at the order sheet on the pac-nor site, and below is what I'm thinking about. Mainly for a hunting/playing rifle. I want to shoot 168 grain VLD/ABLR, but would like to keep the door open to...

    YES! ordered some RL26

I've been looking for a while now, and Cabelas on-line had some, I ordered 2 lbs. (they also has RL23, but I really haven't heard anything that interesting about that one). I almost gave up looking. I had to eat the HAZMAT fee ($20), but I can live with it. This will be for test loads for a...

    Ruger American FTF

Hey guys, I'm trying to solve a failure to fire issue on my RA 308 win. Just about 10% aren't firing, and it looks like the primer is getting a soft hit. I'm cleaning the bolt assembly again, but it looks pretty good. The primers are the same lot as I use with another rifle, and have zero...

    Nosler Univ. Drop Tables

I started reading about the difference between G1 and G7 BC, and I'm starting to feel lost. In the Nosler manual, are those "Universal Drop Tables" for G1, G7, or does it matter? I think the G7 version really comes into play past 6 or 7 hundred yards (at least from what I can tell so far)...

    Barrel Contours

I don't have any experience with barrel replacements, so I'm trying to figure out what people like in terms of contours. I measured my Ruger M77 300 win mag. The start of the taper is 0.9", and the end of the 24" barrel is 0.625 (roughly). It's a heavy rifle anyway with the laminate stock...

    A dark path

I took another step toward my rifle transformation dreams. I bought some Nosler brass for the first time, and it's 280AI! I'm still on a slow timeline, I think after this fall's hunting season, I'm going to send my rifle down to Pac-Nor for a new barrel. It's currently a 270 win...

    Competition Dies

I'm slowly (on a 2 year plan) trying to come up with a tooling list I'd like to have when I re-barrel my rifle. I only have one set of competition dies, and they are RCBS in 223. Really like the micrometer seating adjustment. Anyway, RCBS doesn't make comp dies in the caliber I'm wanting...

    RL22 and 17

It's been a while since I've seen Alliant powders around. I found several 1# bottles of RL22 and RL17 at Sportsmans warehouse in Hillsboro OR (not that you guys are going to jump on a plane to get some, just saying you might find some in circulation). I did grab one # of RL22. (y) They...

    Spoon and Crockpot Oregon Blacktail

Took a little buck this morning. It pretty much went down right out of the play book. I parked the truck about 5:30am, hiked into the timber using the GPS and headlamp, sat down leaning up against a tree and waited for light. It seemed like I just sat down (maybe it was like 20 min) when out...
