It is interesting that you write this. Back 30 years ago this exact 06 was a true tack driver shooting 5 shot groups the size of a quarter using IMR4350. I also have my dads 1970 Browning BLR .308 which was exactly the same way way he was loading that .308 with IMR4350. I was told by some...
Hi All
I am in the process of working up some new loads for my older Winchester Model 70 30-06 with the 165gr Nosler Partitions. I have been shooting the 180gr Partitions for 40+ years but am thinking about a change to the 165gr. The powder that I am currently using is H4350. What I am...
I guess I did forget to mention that I hunt mostly whitetail and mule deer. I do also hunt elk and moose. Almost all of the areas that I hunt have a relatively high odds of a grizzly bear encounter. This was what has kept me using the 180gr Parts on all of my excursions. I am thinking that the...
I guess basically I need to load some up and see what kind of groups I get with the 165gr Parts out of my 06. This will be the only way to know. I have stuck with the 180s for many years because there is the chance that I can run into a grizzly bear even while whitetail hunting. This year found...
So I’m curious what some of you think about the benefits and drawbacks of either the 165gr and 180gr Nosler Partitions with respects to the 30-06? I have currently been shooting the 180gr for many years in my two Winchester Model 70s. I have only ever shot some 156gr Sierra Boattails with...
I just purchased a RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme from a buddy and was going to do a full service like clean and lube. I am curious what everyone is using for a lubricant on the main ram? Just wondering if people just use it dry or some sort of synthetic lubricant? What’s the best product to put on...
Just found this and am reading as I have two Leupold VXIIs 3x9 40m on Mod 70 30-06 and a Browning BLR .308. I am planning to replace the Leuppld VXII 2x7 on another Mod 70 30-06 with something in the 6x20 range. Not sure which to pull the purchase pin on yet.
Well tonight I laid the old Norma brass to rest. It served me well and helped fill the freezer many times over. The Nosler brass will have to step up to the plate and do its job now.
I think that I won't be trying to stretch the penny so far at the risk of a separation. For me hunting in the East and West Kootenays of BC I regularly see the tracks of or the Grizzly Bear itself. Not something that I should be risking my life on just to be able to stretch out a favorite brass...
Thank you Paul for this information. I have 2 similar Winchester Model 70 30-06s and a set of dies for each. I will reset the dies again. I think I will finally retire the old Norma brass. It has been the best brass that I have worked with by far. I just opened a box of 50 Nosler brass pieces...
If checking internally for cracks with a paper clip is it best to leave the end of the paper clip straight or put a small 90 degree bend like a hook to drag on the inside wall?
I have some older Norma 30-06 brass that has been reloaded well over 15 times now and has been annealed. I just found 2 cases with what I call a crack ring on them. I attached a picture of one of the cases. My question is with showing 2 cases of this type of separation would it be best to scrap...
Wow TXbaldhunter that is a sweet group there. Is a 45.0grn load a compressed load? I see in the manual that 43.0grn is Max and sits at 97% case capacity. Being an old lever action I don't want to push compressed loads.
My dad bought this rifle brand new and had a fixed 3X Leupold scope on it. I have taken it over and put a Leupold VXII 3X9 on it and it has a whole new life. I pick straws to see if I carry it or my 06. Many elk and even moose have been dropped with her over the years. Dad was smart and...
After finally getting out to the range I think that this old 1970 Browning BLR likes the 42.0grs and the 42.5grs of IMR4895. The 41.0grs also has promise as well. I might try to fine tune between 42.0 and 42.5grs to see if the grouping tightens any more than either of those two loads. Either...
I am currently using IMR8208XBR powder, but am looking to switch to a powder that is a little easier to come by. The 8208XBR is grouping alright, but seems a little harder to locate stock of it.
Was going to work on some new loads with IMR4895 for my .308 Winchester. The bullet that I am using with this powder is a 165gr Nosler Partition and CCI primers. Just wondering if anyone has loaded with this combo or even loaded with the IMR4895 and what they had as their best charge? The...
Thank you all for your input. I have a bullet drop app that shows the following
so here what is listed
180gr Partitions
2620fps
0 at 200 yds
after calculations it shows 2.9" high at 100yds
-3.9" at 250yds
-9.7" at 300yds
-17.5" at 350yds
So I am guessing that the 3" high at 100yds sight in...
Ok, I have been having discussions with some newbie hunter/shooters/reloaders about aim points. This will mostly relate to 30-06 180gr Parts and 180gr AccuBonds but can be for all rifles.
Over my many years of hunting, reloading and shooting when I hit the range to test new loads and finally...
