Keeping your powder dry - what's your secret?

This weekend we had a "wintry mix". I stalked around on Saturday in the rain / snow / sleet without getting a shot but did have some fun trailing two does all morning. I removed the primer at the end of the day and put all of my gear in a small bathroom with a dehumidifier to dry overnight...

Sabots vs Powerbelts, loose vs pellets

Okay, I'll admit it - I got into muzzleloader hunting the lazy way, with Powerbelts and 777 pellets. I was told that the sabots created too much plastic residue in the barrel and required rigorous cleaning between shots. The pellets just seemed like an idiot-proof way to go. The rifle has...

    "Doing my part"

I'd like to teach my son how to "do his part" when shooting, and maybe dad could use a refresher too. What books/sites/resources do you guys recommend to help us help ourselves? Thanks,

.243 and .308 sized to 7MM-08, does it make a difference?

I have a lot of .243 brass and my dad has a ton of .308 brass. I'd like to resize some of it to fit the 7MM-08 that will be here next week. Is it better to neck up or down? Does it make a difference? Will the .308 end up too short?

    "New" Remington trigger?

Does anyone have any comments about the "new" Remington X-Mark Pro trigger? I asked someone who's selling a rifle online and he said the old trigger is better than the X-Mark. Was he right or just trying to sell me his older (NIB) rifle? Thanks,

Half a grain makes that much difference?

Here are two groups I shot today. Browning A-bolt 25-06, 110 AB's, all seated to same COAL, 100 yds. The group on the left is with 47 grains of IMR 4350, the one on the right is 47.5 gr. Can 1/2 a grain make that big of a difference? I'm tickled with the group on the left, pretty good for me...

    Different rifle, same caliber?

How many of you own different rifles of the same caliber? I love my Browning 25-06 and my son wants to hang onto his Ruger compact .243. I'd like to get something that I can shoot quite a bit at the range and also use for deer hunting. I'd like to have something my son won't be afraid of as...

Loads for .45 ACP 185 gr Custom Competition

I have 1,000 of these bullets to play with, now I need some starting loads. This bullet isn't listed in my #5 manual but the 185 Sporting Handgun bullet is. The Nosler website ends up on rifle bullets from the handgun link (???). Can I safely substitute the loads in my book for these bullets? I...

    Chronograph question

Don't have a chrony yet but I have a couple of questions regarding their use: how far can they be from the muzzle and still be accurate/useful? The public range where I shoot has long (at least 18 feet) steel "tubes" you have to shoot through, in order to keep folks from spraying bullets...

    Luxury items vs. must haves

What would you consider to be your reloading luxury items and what is your necessity, have-to-have stuff? I was thinking about getting a turret or progressive press but I should probably get a chronograph instead. Any opinions / ideas? My own list of "stuff" - two RCBS presses (RCBS Supreme...

    Kentucky whitetails, change of plans

My son doesn't want to use my .25-06, even though I have a really accurate Accubond load thanks to you guys. He wants to stick with his Ruger Compact .243. I don't have a chrono but that 16" barrel has to be keeping velocities low. The local shop had 2 boxes of 85 gr. BTs and not much else in...

    Progressive press question

First, is anyone using a progressive press for rifle ammo? I've been reloading for a while with two older RCBS presses. Mostly .45 ACP, .243, and .25-06. I tend to load in batches, usually 100 of the .45 or 40 of the rifles at a time. When I resize the bottleneck cases, I use RCBS case lube...

Portable loading bench (for the pickup?)

It's a long way from our house to anywhere that we can shoot. I was thinking that since I have an extra Rockchucker and an extra scale, that I might build something that I can put on the tailgate of my pickup and use as a loading bench at the range. I'd think it would great to be able to load...

    Load development in hot weather

The temperatures here are in the upper 90's. I've got to get going on a load my my son to shoot in the 25-06. I'm starting with 52 grains of RL22 and 110 gr Accubonds. Are there any tricks to working up loads in hot weather? How do you keep a sporter (Browing A-bolt) cool? I'll be firing 5...

25-06 - which bullet for Kentucky whitetails?

I've been lurking here for a while and now need some advice. I'm looking for a bullet recommendation for a 25-06 for medium sized whitetails. My son (11) will be using the gun in October for our Youth weekend. Shots will range from 50 - 200 yards. I have a really accurate load worked up with...
