I'd have to disagree that the 94 30-30 is not accurate - its hunting accuracy is more than sufficient for the expert lever gunner up to 200 yards. Depending on the year of manufacture, one can add peep sights or an offset scope mount for more accuracy.
Low BC bullets - so what? One is not...
Having hunted 340 and 342 with a 30-06, I didn't feel uncomfortable using it in grizzly country. I was using handloads with Nosler's 200 and 220 grain partitions which would do the job on elk, and if necessary on grizzly.
If you want a heavier cartridge, check out .338-06, 35 Whelen, 9.3x62.
The only notable experience I've had is that properly chosen Nosler bullets that were loaded and accurately placed always work. I've yet to be let down.
I'll be going moose hunting this fall with my new custom LH bolt action in 8mm Mauser. Which of Nosler's bullets should I consider for handloads? I expect most swamp donkey encounters to be 150 yards or less.
Thanks!
Why not look at this as a good excuse to get him a new rifle - Tikka, Savage, and a few others make good quality, yet affordable rifles. Your brother will think the world of you when you get him one. Later on, you can ask him to return the favor for you, his big brother.
What's not to...
I'd like to know if this new bullet will require extra special attention to cleaning the barrel - that was the case with the X-Bullets and wonder if this will need to be done with the E-Tip?
I'd go with the 325 WSM if these are the only two chamberings you're considering.
Elk aren't armor-plated and the bullets available will put down the elk if you do your job and place the bullets properly.
As for range, all of my experience has been shooting elk under 200 yards so I've yet to...
It has been done with the 35 Remington chambered in a Marlin 336.
You may want to go to MarlinOwners.com and search for entries by a fellow "35remington" who has done extensive handloading for the 35 Remington.
My choices:
.25-35 Winchester in Winchester model 94 Trail's End version
.348 Winchester in Winchester Model 71
.45-70 Govt. in either 26 inch barrelled Marlin 1895 or 22 inch USRAC 1886
Good for any big game in North America.
John Barsness uses a different method that may also be simpler and worth considering in his article "Annealing Case Necks".

Not sure if you're still looking, but the Lefty's forum at Rimfire Central has a list of lefthanded guns available.

Would like to see the following:
165 or 168 gr .308 cal
200 gr in .358 flat point for 35 Remington
350 or 405 gr flat point in .458 (for .45-70, .450 Marlin, .458 WM (reduced loads))
I'm thinking of trying the 38 cal 180 gr HG Partition in my Marlin 336C in 35 Remington. Will this bullet hold up at 2100-2200 fps speeds? Will it hold up for use in deer to moose? I realize I'll likely have to seat this bullet deep.
Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.
