Hi Guys...
Well the Coyotes are really numerous this year so I have put a 4.5 X 14 Fullfield Ballistic Plex scope on the .280 CDL for some Yote hunting.

I have a box of 120 gr Ballistic Tips and various powders soooo.... any suggestions for a recipe?

Is this a good set up? This is the 1st time varmint hunting for me.

I also have a new Vanguard Sub MOA in .308....and a box of Sierra 125 SBTs  I guess that also is a possibility?

Everything else are larger calibers....

Tom,

Good excuse to go get yourself a 22-250!

The 280 Rem with the 120 gr BT will do the trick. I would go with RL19,
start at 53.5 grs and work up to a Max load of 57.5 grs. You will want accuracy more than velocity.
Other suggested powders are IMR4831 and IMR4350.

For the 308 Win and the 125 gr, give Varget a try.

Hope you kill lots of coyotes.

I use my .280 quite often to hunt yotes......not looking to keep the pelts however. I use 150gr SilverTips and Viht powder. In snow clear to my neck at the moment, so I'll look when I get home.... can't remember if it's N-160 or N-165, but shoots under 1.0 @ 200.
I've actually never had much damage with the 150's.

Yes...My son lives in Golden, Colo...you guys got a LOT of snow!!!

I lloaded up some .280 120gr BTs with H4831...53.5, 55.5, 57.5 We'll see what happens soon.

I also loaded some Varget and Re 15 with 125gr SBTs for the new .308. I have a 3.5X10X50mm Conquest on her.

I dont wanna hijack the thread, but loading in 2g excrements is not a good idea. You can totally skip over an accurate "node" in 2g. A better idea is to do 1g increments, and if you want even better, .5g or .2g is a better route.

57grains of Viht N-165 and 150gr SilverTips is the round out of mine.

I do agree with Remington Man.. .5gr increments...It took me years to find this load, this round has been the most finiky I've ever played with.

Thas what I will normally do but I had little 4831 left... so since The 53.5 was Noslers most accurate and 57.5gr load was listed as really great by several others I will try these....Viht 165 powder is not available within 200 miles of here but I am traveling toward Chicago in a few weeks and will stop at the new Cabelas near Milwaukee.

My partner Longwinters and I have had several .280s and have found them very easy to please in 140, 150, and 160 gr loads using either RE 19, RE 22, H 4831, or H 4350.

Our Sako 75 Hunters both printed sub 0.25" MOA with various bullets.

My Browning SS Stalker shot a 0.41" three shot group at 200yds with 54.0 gr of H 4350 behind 140gr Accubonds.

I guess I have been lucky...I usually have gotten sub MOA by cross referencing my powder books and working up/down a few increments.

Sako sure does make an accurate rifle though...I always thought and read the .280 Rem was pretty easy to load for with great accuracy. I wouldn't mind owning a 280 AI w/26" tube. Equal 7 RM velocities with couple grains less powder, and get an extra shell in the magazine!

Ohhh Yeah!

I had a chance to buy a Speedy Gonzales custom built .280 AI from a guy on 24 hr Campfire...it was the ultimate dream gun! Built on a Remmy Sendero frame, 26" Lilja barrel, Mcmillan Edge stock...weighed 8# and shot 1 hole groups with either reg .280 or AI ammo. 8)

I didn't have the $1700... :(

Mine is a Rem 700 Stainless Synthetic. For about two years I threw every powder bullet combo I could at it to get it to shoot.
I've done a lot of 100yrd bench-rest and have never had an issue with Rem-700's shooting under .5@100. This Viht seems to be the ticket for this one. I did play with some 140AB's and RL-19 a few weeks ago, that would be ok for a hunting round.

His load for 140s was RE 22...at least 60gr.

Most my .280s have shot 0.50 or better with either Re 19 or H 4831 ( 140 gr )...Never played with 150s.

140 N Accs kill deer like lightning and I worked up 160s for Elk. RE 22 got me under an inch with 160s.

There would be a lot that disagree, but I'd use this round for most anything in North America. Took my Mule deer this year, and have taken several elk with it.

Maybe, just maybe a heavier bullet would have given a bit better reults & less shots fired? I'm a big believer in using enough gun/bullet. I like good 165gr bullets as a min. in the .30 for elk, but prefer 180gr for better penetration, more internal damage.

I now have a Rem Sendero in .300RUM for my cannon if need be.
Right now, my favorite two elk rounds are my wife's .260 and my 7-08.
The -08 has put numerous elk down with the 150gr B-tip. Tiz all about shot placement.
