Thought I'd share a picture from my 2010 Oregon elk hunt. This was a general season, spike only hunt, in a rugged Oregon wilderness area. No ATV's, no guides, just strictly hard work and do it yourself hunting!

Shot this bull on the third day of the hunt, at 400+ yards, using a Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker, topped with a Leupold VX3 3.5-10X40mm - B&C Reticle. Used hand-loaded Barnes TSX's in .338 Winchester Magnum, over 72.0 grains of RL 19.

Shot the bull at 9:20 a.m. - with four of us packing the 3.5 miles out of the wilderness we finally reached the trucks at the trail head right before dusk. Definitely not a "trophy" bull, but one that I'll remember always.

Congratulations. He will be a good eating bull. A satisfying hunt consists of so much more than a trophy hanging on the wall. The memories are priceless; and the camaraderie of shared hunts continues for many years after.

Man, great elk! Hunting in the Wilderness areas is just awesome. Sounds like your 338 is doing its work well! I have the same scope, but a 2.5x8 and it is awesome. Love the B&C reticle. Looks like a good trophy to me! Scotty

Thanks for the update on your hunt....that will eat well!!! The ones your "earn" through shared labor are the most memorable. The stories that will will be told about getting it out of there 10 years from now after a couple of cold ones will be worth hearing

Congratulations on your spike bull.
Looks like some beautiful country.

Congrats. Seems to me that Oregon is full of trophy spikes. You never know when you are going to even see one so its a speacial day when you finally get to pull the trigger on one. Sounds like you made a heck of a shot as well. Its hard to beat those 338 WMs loaded with a 225 gr bullet. Its also nice hunting in a party to help get those critters out! I forgot how big they are. A guy goes a few years without killing one, then walks up on one he just shot he gets a good dose of reality!

You must of been pretty high to get that much snow?

Thanks, guys. You're right, we were hunting above 7,000. Definitely a great time, and lucky to be hunting with guys that are willing to help pack out!

Congratulations on your elk, and he is a trophy, any animal we take fairly is a trophy! You worked hard and got a great elk, great memories, and wonderful meat to eat. Not too bad shooting either!!

Good job that is a trophy in my books anytime you get a bull Elk it is something to be proud of.
The Elk is the bonus :)
Those steaks will taste mighty good this winter.

Blessings,
Dan

Congrats man! Thatis one to be proud of! "Horn soup" is over-rated! Well Done! CL

Great job TBastian
Sounds like you did it the right way
Is this the same area you hunted last year
We hunted east agin but was not succesful on the elk but was a great hunt
We traveled about 6 miles per day
Everybody saw Bulls but unable to get clean shots at them

Charlie,
We hunted near the same area as last year. Finally got into critters on the third day of the hunt. Glad to hear that you logged some miles and had a great trip. Hope all is well in Reedsport.
