Does anyone have any thoughts on the 40 or 55gr.ballistic tips as coyote loads in this caliber?Anyone have any loads they wish to share? Thanks,Monashee

Id use the 55g if I was you. I dont have any loads, but should shoot around 3900-4000fps with the 55g bullet. Thats plenty for any coyote within 600-700 yards.

I agree with Remington.
The 55grn out of my standard 22-250 is short of incredible. Sorry, this is the one gun I use the Blitz-kings in.

While I prefer heavier bullets myself for coyotes, I have seen some devastating results from 40 grain Ballistic Tips from a 22-250 AI.

My dad had a 22-250 AI with a 30 inch Hart barrel on it. With a hot load of H 4895 he could push 40 grain BT bullets to 4500 fps. When shot with that a coyote would fold up like you cannot believe. They would seldom even kick.

You talk about a red mist, ground squirrels would just literaly explode when shot with that load.

And I do not think I ever saw an exit hole on a coyote, would be a good load if you wanted to save the pelts.

I had a 220 Swift shooting 40g BT's at 4450fps and killed a couple coyotes with them. My experience was that if they were around 200 yards and closer, they dropped like no other and had no exits. However, at 250-350, I had huge entrance blowups, with little penetration, resulting in a coyote running off. I had to plug 2 coyotes an extra shot becuase the little 40g exploded on the shoulder. If I woulda been using the slower, but better 55g BT at 3925fps, it would have crushed the shoulder and simply dropped him. I also shot the 40g VLC barnes to 4550 with H-380, and it simply vaporized squirrels and rabbits. It was an absolute lazer. However, for coyotes, I"ll take a 55g bullet at 3900-4000fps any day. Coyotes are tough critters for there size and they have a will to live.

Monashee, I shoot 55 BT's out of my 22-250AI, and absolutely love them. I use 37 gr. of Ramshot Big Game powder. That is a pretty mild load @3700 fps, but it shoots 5 shots inside a dime at 100 yds and into 1.5" at 300 yds. I just can't bring myself to change anything, just to get a bit more velocity. Prairie poodles and ground squirrels evaporate when hit so it's kinda like the old saying, "how dead is dead?".

My Rem 700 VS in 22-250 AI (24 in barrell) shoots the 40gr CT BT around 4000fps with IMR4895 CCI BR-2 primers. I have used this combo to shoot approx 100 woodchucks with excellent results. Accurate, reliable expansion at all ranges 50yrd-400yds. I have 55grs CT BT but haven't loaded/tested them yet. If I were to use the AI on coyotes, I would use the 55gr CT BT or the BTs. I have shot a coyote with a 55gr BT in a 225 win and a red fox with a 55gr BT in a 6mm Rem with great results.
