.222 petloads

Just bought a Remington 722 from a friend with an aftermarket laminate stock. Going to pick it up this week.

The .222 has been on my bucket list since forever. He didn’t have any ammo but I bought dies and 100 pieces of brass. I have Federal 205 and CCI 400 small rifle primers.

On hand I have H 380, IMR 3031 and 4895, but nothing faster and 52 grain Hornady BTHP and 55 grain Sierra Gamekings. I would like to shoot 40-50 grainers for both punching paper and varmints.

Any pet loads to share?

I had a 722 years ago. I think you're going to want some faster powders. I was only about 15 at the time so I was pretty limited to whatever my Grandfather had on hand. IMR4198 is what I used with various 50-52gr bullets. TNT, Blitz, etc. I bet the 40gr ballistic tip would be a nice bullet in the triple deuce. My 722 was never super accurate, but would hold sub moa groups and I was able to shoot ground squirrels out to about 300yds with it.

I’ve been told 4198 is the golden goose with a .222 but Ken Waters lists several accurate loads with the 3031, I may give it a try before buying 4198.

All I ever shot was IMR4198 from my older ADL 700 in a triple deuce. It shot 40g VMAX into 1/4 MOA at 3600fps consistently. It also shot all the 50s, 52s, and 55 plastic tipped bullets all around 3/8 to 1/2 MOA at most. One of the more accurate factory rifles I ever owned. Wished I never would've sold it...

A 24" barreled Sako Riihmaki shot my best groups with IMR4198 & Hornady 50SX lit by a 205M not chronographed for some reason. W748 also worked well with same bullet primer at just under 2900fps. This was a great lot of 50SXs in a few rifles up a Swift at 3850fps.

With Hornady 53 Match HPs H322 (again not chronographed) & IMR3031 (at just under 3000 fps) shot under 1/2" with 205Ms. With the H322 loads RP 7 1/2 primers doubled group size with all else the same.

Still wondering why I sold that rifle.

I am pretty sure that H322 is a very well established 222 powder.

I shoot 22 grs of H-322, Lapa brass, and both 50 gr Nosler or Hornady bullet. Velocity is a little over 3200 fps from my 722.

You have IMR3031 and 4895. Have used both. Never could get all of the listed weight of IMR3031 in case. Shot fair. 4895 does ok in some rifles. A friends 222 loves it. BLC2 23grs with a 52 gr match hp was always a good load for me. Dan.

My friend never loaded for his rifle. (Same make and Cal.) As I recall it was stupid accurate with green box, and a ball to shoot. Have fun! CL

Bought some 4198 and a box of Fiocchi 50 grain VMAX factory loads.

I didn’t have time to make it to the range so sighted it in over the hood of the pickup, this target is from 75 yards. Liking what I see so far, am sure a benchrest and handloads will tighten that up.

The bullseye is smaller than a dime so...

Nice! Its tough to beat the inherent accuracy of a triple deuce. It wasn't the king of BR for many years without good reason. Look no further than IMR4198.

That’s exactly what I did Jorey, I bought some IMR4198. Just waiting for a day to go try it out with the 40 and 50 grain NBTs and Varmageddon BTs.

Sweet deal! Let me dig up my notes, but I'm thinking it was around 21 or 21.5g with a 40g VMAX was money. I need to get me another one...
