What do you all suggest for a 22 LR cleaning system? I have always used Boresnakes before in the past to get my 22s clean, but I have a love for J. Dewey rods and brushes for my bigger rifles and shotguns.

Nothing wrong with coated roads and nylon brushes for the .22; however, the bore of a well-built .22 LR does not require the same degree of attention as does the bore of a centerfire rifle.

Dr,

Would using a .17 Dewey rod be wise? I have one for a Savage 17HMR I had and regrettably sold, and am wondering if I can go that route instead of having to buy a whole new one.

I may be a bit "springy," but if you take care, I would assume it should work. You may be as well off using a calibre appropriate jag with a patch and good solvent (such as Hoppes No. 9) as using a brush.

I rarely clean my 22's but when I do it is only with a patch with Hoppes #9 including my Hi dollar target pistols. One area I do use a brush on is the chamber which I take a .24 caliber brush and bend it in an L shape so that the bristles don't reach the rifling. .22's shoot their best with fouled barrels and the 22 rim fire has been known for it's clean bore loading for ever.

I have worked a few world class rimfire bench rest matches and those shooters almost NEVER CLEAN A BORE. They will clean the chamber and action but not the bore. Some clean after 10,000 rounds or if accuracy starts to go away.
