I asked on another forum and thought I would ask here as well. How does the .243 Winchester do as a target round? Lets say a heavy barreled bolt action shooting at paper at 100 yards as compared to the same thing in .22-250. Thanks for any replies or questions. Happy new year.

I had one in a Ruger 77 varmint. 1.25" groups at 340 yards. This was the farthest my old range would safely allow. Now this was totally unofficial "match" shooting but I was impressed.

Leo,

In a good bolt action with a good hand load, a 243 Win will give you excellent accuracy.

Leo, here's a link to an excellent article discussing the .243 Win as a target and hunting cartridge.

No need for all that velocity for a mere 100 yards, but it makes a dandy choice for 500 - 1000 yards! Excellent brass from Lapua and high BC match-grade bullets make it an excellent choice for longer-range precision shooting. The only real drawbacks to it seem to be a fair amount of case stretching in the standard version (easily solved by using the AI version) and a pretty good appetite for barrels.

The barrel life thing is all relative - it will eat barrel throats faster than say a .308 Winchester, but no faster than other small bore, high performance cartridges. I've still got a couple of spare .308 barrels sitting here for my target rifle, but have seriously considered the .243 as an option. For a target cartridge it beats the .308 in every catagory except barrel life.
