Which of these rifles would you buy in 257 weatherby. The remington comes with the 26 inch barrel where as the vanguard only comes with the 24 inch barrel?

The 26" barrel is a real plus. I have the vanguard and it shoots very well. However it has a 24" barrel and I am sure I loose some speed. Factory 100gr SP ammo gives me 3460FPS and my 100gr SP handloads will give me 3555FPS so far. I have only tried IMR7828SSC/Imr7828/IMR4831 and RL22 so far.
I like the weatherby and am happy with it. I would prefer to have a Weatherby over the Rem myself. But if the Rem is priced right it would be a nice rifle also.

The difference in barrel length will cost you 50 to 70 fps, which is insignificant in the real world. The Vanguard is earning a well-deserved reputation for dependability and accuracy. However, you really wouldn't go wrong with either of these rifles.

I am a Remington guy. I would look for the Limited Edition M700 LSS in 257 Weatherby. Sweet looking rifle.

I would want the 26" barrel to take full advantage of the 257 Wby but that is my opinion.

JD338

As usual, I would agree with JD 338. My dad has one of those Remington 700 LSS rifles and it shoots great, looks good, and with the 26 inch barrel gives some IMPRESSIVE velocities.

They were a limited edition, but there are still a few around. Might have to have your retailer check with his suppliers.

I have nothing in particular against the Vanguards, having not messed with one in years. BUT, a long time back we had lots of problems with them. One buddy had a 22-250 that had such a tight bore that he could not shoot factory ammo in it, only very light loaded reloads. A couple of others had bolt faces that were messed up, they would invariably peirce a primer and the bits and peices would wind up inside the bolt. They would not fire till the bolts were taken apart and cleaned.

I would much prefer the 26 inch barrel of the Remington. However, I am not sure the SPS is any longer made in the .257 Wby Mag. The current 2010 Remington catalog only shows the .257 Wby Mag as being chambered in the CDL SF. That CDL SF is a very appealing rifle, and would be my first choice here. (Although, I know where there is one of those LSS rifles sitting on a shelf, it is tempting.)

Depending on what you are going to use the rifle for, but I'd look towards the Rem CDL version. I have the SPS and like JD I'm a big Remington fan...... With that said, I can't say I'm real impressed with the small detail / finish work of the SPS I have. It's a shooter though. Target is a load on the very first outing.

I think the 26in Tube is well worth it in this cartridge

It would be hard to beat either make of rifle, but I am also a Remington man.
I believe that they are the working mans rifle.
26" tube is still workable so I would go with that.
Just my 2 cents worth

Blessings,
Dan

why would you short change your self with the vanguard if you have an option. I have a christensen arms in 257 bee that started life as a 700 sps if you can find an sps get it!
