26 Nosler Wildcats

Pretty interesting stuff. I do like the concept for the cartridges.. Plenty of space to get most bullets moving quickly!

I'll be honest, I've been waffling on the 26 Nosler build and kinda wanna do a 28 Nosler. Better barrel life and better/more selection of bullets. I could see a 33Nosler in the safe too. 35 and 37 Noslers sound kind of interesting as well. I really like the case design and think it has a lot going for it. Especially for CRF actions; the case size allows you to utilize standard actions in Win 70s.

Man, I am not sure how much case capacity you'd get from the 26 Nosler case as a 35, but OH man, I am betting it would have to be around STA in capacity..Talk about a cool thumper along with the 375... That would make an awesome rifle as well. I like your idea of running them on CRF type actions. Having a fleet of them would be pretty neat, since case forming is all about the same.

Matrix just came out with a 6.5mm 150gr VLD with a BC around .660 and they already have a 160gr VLD with a BC around .680. They would make the 26 Nosler rock for long range work and run right with the 7mm version using 180 Bergers.

A 7mm or .30 version would probably make for a better all around gun but I wouldn't be afraid to shoot about anything in the lower 48 with the 26 either. I would want to see what the brass quality will be like before I committed to any of them though. Anymore I tend to build stuff that has good brass available for it, especially as expensive as components are getting to be.

...I'd start to get concerned about the neck length when you got to .30cal or above. If there was a rash of Mammoth & cave bear sightings here in WY, I'd probably start w/ a rifle originally designed for a .338 Lapua, & rebarrel it to something based on the .338 Norma case, a .35/36/37/ or .41/338 Norma should put down anything w/i a 25" radius of the muzzle, & destroy anything aligned w/ the muzzle front & back...

The 7mm/26 or .284/26 Nosler is merely the 7x66Vom Hofe.
I still suspect Nosler to have used the Vom Hofe as their platform for the .26N.
The .375/26 Nosler could become a resemblance of the 9,5x66 Vom Hofe or .375 Westley Richards.
The .338/26 Nosler would copy the .338 Blaser Magnum to some point.

They are also have basically identical ballistics to all of the rounds based on a Imp. 300 H&H, 375 H&H, and 8mm Rem. Mag. For that matter they are within spitting distance of everything based on the .300 Dakota case as well, seeing as how the cases are nearly identical except for the shoulder angle and case head size.

Created this 338x26Nosler on Ammoguide. Neck is a little short but not bad. I like the 26Nosler case for wildcatting because it has .534 case head and is only 2.59 long. It will fit in standard length Mod 70 actions(which are easier and cheaper to find). I liked the 375Ruger for the same reasons. There might be some feed ramp work to do on a Win mag action but not much else. The 26Nosler is more of a good thing  If I was using Rem actions length wouldn't matter as much.

Nathan,
I'll be receiving my first batch of brass on Monday and I'll be checking it for uniformity. I think it'll be pretty good. What I don't know is the hardness of the case head and how long the primer pockets will last. I guess I'll just have to shoot some up  . When you pay more than 2$ a piece you can bet I'll baby them and probably anneal at the fourth firing.
The Matrix bullets caught my eye as well. I have no experience with them for hunting though. I'm hoping that Nosler will produce a ...264 150gr+ LRAB.

I've shot a couple elk with the 210 .30 cal Matrix bullets. They weren't that impressive but they made the jackets thinner on the 150's.

.338 interests me... It wouldn't break my heart to push the shoulder back just a touch.
