The .260 I had built for my Dad performed phenominal today. First of all, a huge thanks to Nosler !!!
My Dad had a December Cow tag and hasn't shot a whole lot in the last few years. I've been playing with loads here and there and found a great load with Nosler Brass and the 130gr A-bonds.
( Actually have a better load with the 100gr B-tips, but didn't think that to be appropriate for elk )
This has been the first year we've really taken my Son along too...( he's 5 yrs old ) I had a few reservations in doing so due to the fact we generally take the ATV's and it was supposed to be between 0 deg and negative 20 below.

Saturday morning he did great out on the ATV due to the fact there was too much snow to even get around on them and only lasted about 20 min out on them before getting back in the truck :x We saw a few elk here and there, with the closest @ about 700 yds ( sorry, didn't have the .300RUM with us ) Needless to say Saturday ended without much excitement.

This morning when we got back out it was a different story with elk out and about about everywhere we looked except still way up high. A little further up the road and a little deeper in the snow we found what we were looking for.
Half a dozen or so cows and calves and one without a calf. The Nikon range finder stated 336 yards to the elk just about to cross the top of the hill. Dad put the dot of the 16X Leupold slightly high and pulled the trigger...... the 130gr A-bond was on it's way !
The way she went down I had thought it was a neck shot with that unforgetable "pop" of the bullet hitting. She went straight down and never kicked from what I could tell while sliding down the hill about 30yrds.

My kid was 100% for heading up the hill in a foot of snow and probably around 5 degrees out. ( He's like my Dad and "VERY" stubborn )
The little guy managed to walk all the way up to the elk and get himself back off the hill without any issues.
Great day to see Grandpa & Grandson out sharing hunting stories now.

NOTE: Hope to retreive the A-bond. Bullet actually hit 3/4 of the way up on the front shoulder. Found a small area of a torn up lung and that was it. No noticable damage from the inside. Could have asked for anything better... Thanks again Nosler for a great year !!

Congratulations all around! Seems like that was a wonderful family hunt. Glad to hear the little gun/bullet worked so well on elk! Guess a fellow doesn't need a cannon? Good shooting there!

i am so glad you posted this. i have an 9 yr old that is going to start hunting next few years and i need a cartridge to handle elk and deer. my older son has a 243 but i think is to light for elk. i am very interested in the 260 and cant wait to see if you recover the bullet. congrats on a great hunt.

Powerstroke,

It just don't get any better than that. Almost brought tears. I know your dad proudly cherishes these times with his son and grandson. What a great family moment to share. It won't be too long before you'll be taking pictures of your son's first elk.
Good Hunting
Elkhunt

Thanks Guys,

I do think it's pretty special to be out hunting with both my Dad and Son.

Grandpa is pretty darn pround of his Grandson... right up to the point he purchased him a Savage Cub T for X-mas this year.
I'm sure that'll mean I'll be out this weekend freezing my !#%^%& off taking the little guy shoot. ( ya, I'll be smiling the whole time ) !!

Str8.... I shot you a PM... I'll lend any assistance / info I have

Great Job Powerstroke. Glad to hear about your success. It doesn't get any better then having 3 generations along.

Always nice to see people out with family passing down the legacy. Congrats to all you guys. Glad your son would rather hike in the snow than play video games by the fire.
Can't wait till my boys are a little older!!!

powerstroke, As you know I have several reasons to be happy with this successful story ..... I will soon have a 260.....It is great to hear of your pops success ..... It is great to hear of 3 generations sharing a hunt ...... sounds like lots of fun for all. Can't get any better. Best wishes. Al Crouch

Congrats on the 3 generations out there! My son is now 14 and he started with a Rem700 MTN in a 260. He and I have shot Deer and Elk with that "Little" gun. Elk were shot with 130 Scirroco, since I've switched to 125gn Part. What was amazing is his 1st Elk was a 6pt bull at 75yds and a high shoulder hit dropped it where it stood. Something to be said about the 260.

If people would really use a certain caliber before they start bashing it like the gun rags do or stop believing everything they read in those rags they would learn a great deal. Those 6.5 bullets are as long as a golf pencil and a 140 gr. has a SD about like a 200 gr 30 cal bullet. When you drive a 140 Partition 2700+ fps it will shoot through quite a bit of meat and bone before it gives up. I have never shot an elk nor had the opportunity to hunt elk but I have killed a bunch of deer with a 6.5X55 and if a 140 gr Sierra or a Nosler Partition will shoot from stem to stern of a big buck deer it will kill an elk with no problem. My buddy and I use to control a big farm in NC and we killed 100 deer a year off it for 15 years. My buddy got one of the first 260 Remington 700's that came out. He killed 45 deer with it one year using 140 Sierra and 120 Nosler ballistic tips and only had one deer take a step after being hit. This deer was a good size buck and was standing in some high weeds very late in the evening. He was actually standing with his neck turned with his head facing his rear end. My buddy just followed his neck down with the cross hairs to where his front shoulder was supposed to be and squeezed one off. He actually shot the deer in the liver and gut. The deer took three jumps and piled up and was dead by the time he got to it. If I ever get a chance to go elk hunting I will be carrying my 264 Win mag and will have my 6.5X55 Swede with me as a back up gun in case something happens to the 264 mag.
Oh! I almost forgot. Did you recover the bullet yet? What did it look like?

Great to hear that project is getting close to being completed. I'd certianly like to see some pics of the final result. I'd especially enjoy seeing the targets and load results. I have a feeling you're going to love that "little gun" !

1Shot....
No, no bullet yet, will probably be anotehr week or so before I know. I'm not holding my breath as I did see some lung damage and I did dig aroudn briefly looking for the bullet. ( sorry, it was cold out and I just had a T-shirt on at the time )
Here is a pic of a 130gr A-bond I captured in some milk jugs shot @ 100yds. ( AKA The JD338 method )

Good shot placement and a good bullet count for a lot more than the sheer horsepower of a cartridge.

Again - great photos and story. Nice to see a family hunting together!
