Just curious if anyone had any pet loads they would like to share, starting load work on a 22" barrelled Ruger with a 1 in 10 twist tomorrow. Load development is slow in this heat, so I figured I'd ask. I have a pair of turrets for my Leupold CDS built for the 270WSM built around the 140gr AccuBond at 3033fps. I'm not sure I will get enough velocity to use them from the standard 270 with a 22" barrel, but will set up the chronograph just in case.

What powders would you recommend starting with to get top velocity from a 22" barrel? From the looking I did in my books I'm thinking of H100V, H4831, and H1000 to start. I also have RL22 and H and IMR4350, and IMR4831 on the shelf. The RL powders have seemed more temperature sensitive for me in the past so I'm going to hold off on them for now. I'm going for accuracy rather than speed, but I'll take all the speed I can get with accuracy and consistent velocity within safety limits. With a high of 95 tomorrow I'll keep starting loads light.

I don't shoot .270, but I shoot .280 and they're awfully similar.

Just looking over the list of powders you've mentioned I'd have though H1000 would be just the ticket, but I ran QuickLOAD on it and it looks like you wouldn't be able to get enough of it in the case to get anywhere near the velocity you want. I'm like you and would want to go with a powder that won't bring on velocity variations with temperature changes. I've found H4831SC to be THE powder for .280 when loading 150-grain Partitions and I suspect you'd get comparable results in your .270 with 140s. Based on the results QL gave me, I think you should be able to get close to 3000 fps without pushing too hard, maybe in the neighborhood of 2950 fps but that's based on some default values input to the program. Even if you come up short velocity-wise, your custom turrets should be pretty close for ranges not exceeding some reasonable yardage. If you're wanting to shoot 800 or 1000 yards, though, maybe another powder like Re22 would work if you can deal with the temp sensitivity. It's really too bad Alliant hasn't done something to make Re22 more temperature tolerant, it really is a great powder otherwise.

mcseal2 I don't load the 140 gr. in the 270, but I load for a buddy with the 130 gr. Partition. I worked up my load with H4831SC and Federal 215 magnum match primers. He gets 3030 fps and really good accuracy out of his Remington Mountain rifle. I already had the load and it worked great, but I played with IMR4350 and Federal 210 match primers and it worked equally as well or seemed to have as much potential as H4831SC. I think those two powders and H4350 as well as IMR4831 both would be very good.

Good shooting!

From your list I would start with IMR-4831. Hard to beat in a 22 inch barrel.

H4831 or RL22.. Maybe some others like H1000 or IMR7828 if you can get enough in the case. I shoot alot of RL22 in the WSM, works for me from 0-600, Winter or Summer.. I think 2950+ should be doable in your 270 MC. Shouldn't be out of the realm of possibility at all.

RL-19 has worked for me with every 140 gr bullet I have ever shot out of a 270 WCF.

Thanks for the replys. I will post results as I get them, maybe starting tonight.

You could go with 58.0 grains of IMR 7828 SSC and a Fed 215 Mag Mat primer. That will get you close at slightly <3000 but is a hot load.

I my .270 Model 70, with 24 inches of barrel, I can barely get 3040 fps with 55.0 grains of MR4350 and a Match primer which is maximum in my rifle and very accurate. I have never been convinced any of the 75 deer that I have killed with this combination that a 140 grain would make much difference, at least to these deer. For something bigger, maybe?

For me H 4831 sc with G215M Federal Mag Primers and 58gr for 140 AB. This is accuracy load from 22 imch barrel. About 2850 FPS but almost in the same hole at 100 yards.
R-22 did not work for me with the same bullet. Velocity load? H1000 with the same mag primers in the winter and max load from Hodgdon manual. 3000 fps and accurate. It is hot load!!!
Great bullet.

I was at Cabelas yesterday picking up a few things and got a box of Hornady Superformance 140gr SST factory loads to try. Their velocity on the box shows to be 3090fps from a 24" so I figured I might get my 3000+ from a 22" barrel. I shot 6 getting sighted in, cleaning after every shot to break the barrel in. Early results aren't real promising, but I will shoot some actual groups before making a final judgment. I got it dialed in now anyway so I can start shooting for accuracy with a cold barrel. I still won't know to much until I get past the first 10 rounds and start cleaning every 3 shots instead of every shot. I've got H4831SC on the shelf also so I think I'll give that and H1000 a try first off if the factory loads continue to be erratic.

the superformance loads are smokin fast. the 130gr shoot at 3167 in my 22" .270 win. sometimes they shoot great - sometimes not so great. average groups in my rifle are around 2".

I gave up on the 140gr in my 22" .270. after following the advice of the guys on this board I got the 130gr BT shooting .6" groups at 3065fps. H4831 just wont push the 140gr in my rifle. I was able to get great groups but they were all with light loads under 2800fps.

I used H4831sc and RL22 with great results in both accuracy/speed from a 22" rem 700.

I was getting 3000fps and 1/2 moa. Worked pretty good out to 800...

I load H4831SC in my brother's Ruger .270 with the 140 AB. I use RP brass and a Rem 9 1/2 primer. It did very well with the max load in Nosler #6, although it wasn't quite as fast as they claimed. This particular rifle has shot every bullet I've tried in it pretty well, so we just picked the best one for all around use.

I have never attained the published velocities as shown in Nosler #6 Manual. Some of the loads have been quite acceptable but I have had in almost all cases had to use a little more powder than they recommended.

Well I got some more range work done tonight. I was very pleased with the results, especially considering my bench is a picnic table outside my house. Using the Superformance factory load I put 10 of them through cleaning every shot over the last 2 nights, then shot two 3 shot groups cleaning after every 3rd shot. It didn't agree with this rifle. In the process I did find that the rifle will start throwing shots high and right from a hot barrel. The light barrel really needs a slow 3 shot group to show what it will do, the 4th shot was consistently jumping an inch high and half an inch right. After 16 rounds of factory ammo I left the rifle to cool and headed to the loading bench. I started by loading 2 cases with 56gr and 2 cases with 57gr of H4831SC topped with 140gr accubonds. Neither showed any pressure so I stepped up to the max load from the Nosler book of 58gr and loaded 3. These shot well and still showed no pressure in the 87 degree heat. I ended up shooting 3 groups of 3 shots each cleaning and letting the rifle cool between groups with the 58gr load. Measuring the groups outer edge to outer edge of furthest holes and subtracting the .277 bullet diameter I got groups of .568, .541, and .813 inches. A mouse chewed up the cord on my chronograph so I'm not sure of the speed. The book shows the load reaching 3000fps from a 24" barrel, but I've found many of the shown velocities higher than my results and I have 2" less barrel. Needless to say I'm pretty pleased with the results from a rifle weighing a little over 6lbs and costing $360. I may not be getting the velocity I wanted but I'll have new turrets built if necessary to keep this accuracy. I'll have to get the chronograph working to see where I'm at and if I need to experiment further. The new Ruger American may not be pretty, but it will shoot. I'll post a more thorough review in the rifles section.

Sounds like a nice rifle. I don't think Ruger gets the credit they deserve. They do build some stout reliable firearms.

mcseal; Are planning on loading three with some IMR-4831? 56 grains will get 2900 with 140 AB,s or BT,s with a 22 inch barrel. My chrony records show under 2800 with 58 grains of H4831. Hope ya get your chrony working so ya know your speeds.

That is a great review MC. Thank you for the update. Can't beat that kinda accuracy for the price and the weight of the rifle lends itself to a whole lot of carrying as well.

I also use 58.0g of H-4831 in my 22" barrel with the 140gr ABs. Accuracy has been exceptional but velocity has always been a challenge. I've made peace with this load now and am content with 2870fps.

I will try some RL-22 this month though just because...
