Im kinda new to reloading. I have h4831sc powder and nosler 130 grain ballistic tips. What powder should i start at and what over all length do i start at? My lee information says it is maximum 3.340 overall but usually load data gives you a overall length not just a maximum.

I would start with the book COAL of 3.340" and find the most accurate charge weight that gives you acceptable velocity and then mess with the COAL.

It's always wise to start with the lightest charge in your manual and work up from there. This is especially true if you are somewhat new to the game.

H4831SC should be a good powder for you in the .270 with that bullet weight. If you cannot find a load with that powder, IMR4350 and H4350 are also very good.

fasttwich,

Welcome to the forum. We're glad to have you aboard. H4831SC should be a great powder to use in your 270 Win with the 130 grain BT. For working up your first loads, SAAMI specs that you have listed are a good place to start. That OAL will fit your magazine. Later, as you become comfortable with playing with seating depth, you can adjust if necessary. However, I would not be surprised to learn that your rifle shoots quite accurately at that OAL. Give us a little history of your rifle and your hunting experience when you get a chance.

Ok thanks, I wasnt sure if I should make the length to that 3.340 because looking at hodgdons site they had specific numbers for the length depending on the bullet you are using. My rifle is a remington 700 mountain lss topped with a leupold vx-ii 4x12. I mostly just hunt whitetails in west virginia and pennsylvania. I cant wait to see the hole these ballistic tips leave. I used factory nosler custom 300 h&h AccuBond ammo last year but didnt like it because the AccuBond poked a hole in and out same size and the deer ran for 80 yards. It was tough to track and retrieve in the brush it ran into. From the reviews these look to be the bullets to use.

If there is any combo that should hammer deer straight down, the 130 BT at over 3000 should be the combo. Good luck, H4831 is a good one.

Welcome to the forum and to the world of reloading.

H4831 is an excellent powder in the 270 Win and the 130 gr BT will kill deer like lighting. Put that bullet in the chest of a deer and get out your knife.

You may want to pick up a copy of the Nosler Reloading Guide #6. There is a lot of good information on basic loading, short stories on all your favorite cartridges and very good load data.

Keep us posted with your load development and let us know if you need any additional help.
