Does anyone know what powder Winchester uses in the 270WSM/150gr Power Point load, or is it something not available to reloaders.
I get the best groups and highest velocity with this factory ammo so I'll use it for deer hunting and use my reloads for off season practice.
Unless I find a better reload.

Thanks

It is a non- canister powder...I have been told.

try rl 22 or 25 in handloads.

Most of the big companies use "non-canister" powders. They are blends that we can't make or shouldn't try to

Try the slow burners of any manufacturer: H4831, IMR 4831, Reloader 22, etc.

Check the nosler page for the cartridge, and go from there. I bet you will be surprised in how close you can get to or even pass factory ballistics and accuracy.

My .270win. shoots 130's at 3157fps with H4831sc with a 22" barrel. Factory ammo quotes 3060fps with a 24."

I've tried- H4350, H4831, RE19, RE22, H1000.
only H4831 gave me good accuracy. and single digit ES with a Hor 130 SP
Bullets tried- Hor 130 SP, Hor 140 BTSP, Hor 150 Sp, Nos 130 and 140 BT. The Hor 130 SP has shown the most promise so far.
I have not had a problem getting good velocity just not getting good accuracy.
I will sacrifice velocity to get good groups.
So far I'm getting groups in the 2-2.5 range with most reloads
The Hor 130 SP has got me down to 1.25-1.5 so I'm going to play with it some more.
Gun is a Weatherby Sub MOA
Factory Winchester 150PP shoot under an inch consistently and a velocity of 3183@60 degrees/5000 ft
My 270 is a Win short Mag.
thanks for the quick reply

As an owner of a Win Mod 70 270WSM, my rifle likes RL-19 with 140ABs and most recently, IMR4350 and 130gn ETs. Both loads are well under MOA at 100M

My Krieger-barreled Howa shoots 140 Accubonds really well with RL-22 and MagPro. MagPro velocities are ~3300 w/ 26" barrel. Shoots .3-.4"

thanks for the replies.
I'm heading out to the range tomorrow to try out some more combinations.

W760

But like others said Reloader 22 works great

Reloder 17 is the new powder for the WSM

I read somewhere that Reloder 17 has been approved by the DOT for shipping....I`m waiting for some myself!............ This stuff is supposedly going to be the best powder going for the short mags, because according to Alliant, it was specifically designed for the short mags to increase velocity over all others listed, with as good if not better accuracy than all other powders listed with similiar burn rates, ie; the 4350`s, 4831`s, etc. etc...........

I have heard rumors that the factory Winchester .270 Short Magnums were loaded with Accurate MagPro powder. (which makes no sense, other than it probably would give very high velocities at maximum pressures)
I have played with MagPro a bit, but found best results in my .270WSM with the 140 gr AccuBond and Vihtavuori N-165, and with the 130 gr Ballistic Tip with Reloder 19. The Reloder 19 also gave some great groups with the Sierra 90 gr HP, if you really want to make a mess out of a rockchuck. Another powder that has worked pretty well is Accurate Data 86 extruded, better known as Accurate 3100.
