Hey fellas, I got my eye on a weatherby weathermark in 270wby and was wondering what powder you all prefer? I've got several 140gr btips to experiment with in hopes of using them for practice and the accubonds for hunting. My new nosler manual lists imr 7828 for best velocities but my main concern is temp stability. Any issues with that particular powder? Just wondering what I should keep my eyes open for; i have access to h1000 and a little retumbo but neither are listed in the new manual.

I've used IMR7828 / IMR7828sc in a couple different cartridges , it worked well for me . the way finding components is today , you need to buy what you can find that'll work . powder temp stability is always getting talked about . I don't think it's worth worrying about at normal hunting distances of out to 300 yards , or so . how far are you shooting ? you can put your info in a ballistic calculator and change the velocity , to simulate cold weather velocity drop . then see how much it affects your point of impact . a good calculator is ;

H1000 , is going to be about 109% case fill at max load . this will be a compressed load . I don't like to work with more than about 105% .


the powders below should work in this application .

I understand where you're coming from. I have a bunch of h4831sc and as I said access to h1000 and retumbo. Only thing is the new manual lists h4831 and is at the bottom (top of the page) as far as velocity goes with 140s. They're more or less 270win speeds. Id like to get at least 3200 with 140s considering I've read a lot of guys getting over 3300. It just doesn't appear the 4831s will do that according to the book.

you can't make a cartridge like a certain powder . you have to pick from what you're willing to work with . you can probably get 3200 FPS with the H4831's . IMR7828's is another 80 FPS over H4831's . H1000 makes 60 FPS more than the H4831's , then you have to deal with a compressed load 108.8% case fill at max pressure .

here is a chart of powders highest velocity at the top . these would be considered max loads . start load work ups 4.0 grain below these listed charges . it looks like RL26 will be hard to beat velocity wise . also very hard to find .

Well I picked up my new rifle and it just so happened the shop had 4lbs of 7828ssc so I bought all of it as well.

On a side note, when I got it home I was checking it out and chambered a live round and found it awfully hard to push the bolt all the way forward to be able to close it. Not sure if it's a really stiff ejector or something to do with the extractor trying to get over the rim of the case. Anyone experience this with a new mark v?

I ran a 270 Weatherby for a while. I had outstanding results with the 140 AB and 7828. I played around with the 150 ABLR with H1000, 7828, and RL-26, I couldn't seem to get it to shoot well. I also played with the RL-26 with the 140 AB. I was able to squeak out a bit more speed, but the 7828 shot quite a bit better so I just stuck with it. I think your heading down the right track.

Take one of the rounds, grab a black Sharpie, and color the belt as well as 1/8" forward of that. Also color the shoulder.

Once its dry, try and load it. The Sharpie will tell you where the problem lies.

that should be a good choice of powder . you're a lucky fella to get it so easy . did you clean the rifle ? I'd try giving it a cleaning , chamber and barrel .
 
I noticed with the bolt out of the gun I takes a good bit of force to push the case onto the bolt face as if the extractor has a stiff spring or the angle on it isn't enough. Also there's a small set of lines left on the shoulder every time I chamber it. Are these tooling marks? Should I be concerned about it?
