270WSM light bullet data

I'm wondering if the guys from Nosler can shed some light on the subject of 100-110gr AccuBond loads for the 270WSM? I've got one for my son and I'd like to start him out with lighter bullets and loads for recoil purposes, and can think of nothing better than these bullets for that purpose. They should be good out to 100-150yds for a youth shooting at white-tails, if I'm guessing correctly. Any data or guidance, Nosler?

Thanks!

I would think those 110gr pills at 3475 would get a whitetails attention.

Thanks! And thanks for the PM, also. I'm sorting out where to go after the H4895 youth loads, as I think full house 110gr Accubonds may be the right intermediate step between the youth loads and full house 130-150gr loads. I have a lot of work to do over the next couple of months getting this boy ready for his first centerfire rifle. He's pretty deadly with a 22lr, so it should be an easy transition for him.

dubyam too bad you don't have a 6mm Remington for that next step up! That sounds like a nice rifle and I think he'll be able to handle it. From my own experience part of getting used to a rifle like the 270 WSM is the muzzle blast. Foe me even now I DO NOT mind using soft plugs under ear muffs. It does help lessen the blast substantially and for a lot of young shooters, I think it really helps them a lot when shooting targets and getting used to a rifle. Getting out and shooting at gophers or something else is a whole nother matter and you don't feel a thing. Good luck and show us a picture of your son with his rifle!

Glad to help.
I just got the quickload today, and was playing with the .270 WSM for my own son. He's got a few years on your son, so we were looking at some full tilt stuff. IMO those little 110gr pill at 3100 would kill whitetails for as far as you care to have him shooting for now. He can be the big man, shooting the big gun, and it won't be that big a step for him psychologicaly when you start stepping it up.

Good luck, hope you find something that works great.

I imagine those 110's at anything over 3000 would be devastating on deer. I know with the the 270WSM thicker brass I tend to not get a good seal until I am pushing the pressure a little. Seems like the lighter loads that would get good case seal would have minimal amounts of recoil and really be excellent deer loads, especially with the AB's. Scotty

Thanks for all the conversation, guys. I'm in agreement across the board. 6mm, I can assure you that plugs-and-muffs is a standard for the range for me and my son, every time. I dealt with a noise flinch a number of years ago, and I'm determined not to go back to it!

I've got to get some glass on this rifle and then the big day comes when I get to show it to him. He has no idea I've even bought him a rifle at this point. We've been talking about next hunting season (since the middle of this past hunting season) and that he wants to take Hunter's Safety and carry his own gun afield. I think I'm more excited about this than I was about the last rifle I bought myself! My wife has been laughing at me since I brought it home and stuck it in the safe. As soon as I give it to him, I'll post some pictures. I think he's going to love it.

I'm also hoping to be able to afford a cheap 20ga for his use by summer, as well, so we can dove hunt together. If he's like me, he won't hit crap the first few times, but then it will all click and he'll limit out before me from then on!

And, in a surprise move, my youngest daughter (just turned 5) has asked me to get her some camo and take her hunting. So we're going to go out to the lease one of these early spring weekends and "hunt" a little. I'm thinking she'll enjoy being in the woods, and we can stalk around and see what we see. Maybe a yote will wander into our view and I can whack him for her. She'd probably want to keep the skull on her dresser, though! Not sure Mom would like that.

I load a 130 gr Balliistic Tip with 59.0 gr of IMR-4350 for around 2950 fps out of my 270WSM. Recoil is fairly mild and the muzzle blast from the 24 inch barrel is no worse than a standard .270 Win with a 22" tube. Accuracy is good, and I would be confident out to 300 yards on deer with that load.
Even milder is 58.0 gr of Accurate Date 86 extruded with the 130 gr Solid Base for abour 2750 fps with good accuracy. (Data 86 is a bulk version of 3100, neither are now available, but I have 16 lbs of it. )
