Finished my 28 Nosler build today. Cut the chamber, threaded the shank and the muzzle break. Bead blasted the barrel and inletted the stock.

SPECS

Action: Savage 116 All Weather (300 Win Mag Donor)
Stock: Bell and Carlson full aluminum bed
Barrel: McGowen Stainless 1:8 Twist Sendero profile 27 Inches long
Scope: Meopta 5x30 Optika6

I did a trigger job, it is a glass rod breaking 2lbs. I made a slight modification to the original 300 WinMag magazine to feed the nosler round perfectly
.

Nice looking rifle.
Looks to be on a Savage action. What are the details of your build?

I recently picked up a Savage 116 in .300 Win mag. It simply would not group to my liking so I decided to build a 28N on it. Pulled it all apart blue printed the action, ordered a profiled barrel blank (McGowen 1:8 27") and chambered and threaded on my lathe. Set the headspace snug. I really like the Bell and Carlson stocks with the full aluminum reinforcement bedding so I ordered one for this build. Not sure what other details to give besiders what I posted originally but if you have any specific questions I will be happy to answer them. Cheers!

I finally made it to the range today with the 28 Nosler. As a Deer hunter I am only testing hunting bullets, I tried 160gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, I also tried the 152gr Cutting Edge Maximus, neither of these were spectacular, all under 1MOA but meeh. I then moved to the Hornady 154gr SST, I tried Retumbo powder first and it did not like it. I moved to US869 and the group got tight! I ended up at 94gr of US869 for a 5 shot group (measured outside to outside) of .295 Not bad considering the bullet itself is .284.

SPECS -
Temp -- 68 Degrees
Range -- 100 Yards
AVG FPS -- 3352
BRASS -- ADG
Bullet -- SST 154gr
Powder -- US869 94gr
Primer -- REM 9 1/2 Magnum
COAL -- 3.340
LIGHT CRIMP with LEE DIE

I really wanted to get the BT bullets working, as I have time I will continue developing them, I am sure they will shoot once I get them figured out.

Taking it to the woods in the morning and see if I can get a deer. Taken it twice already in the evening but did not see anything, crossing my fingers for the morning hunt!

Finally got the chance to harvest a doe with the 28 Nosler and the 154gr SST at about 125 yards behind the shoulder. I will be switching to a bonded bullet the deer was knocked off it's feet on impact and it looked like it was hit by a bazooka. Far to much meat loss with that bullet rifle combination. I did not take pictures as it was far to graphic. Great rifle but I would prefer to destroy less of the meat.

Congratulations on the doe. I'd look at the 160 gr AB.

I hated folks using the sst when I was guiding because I had to throw so much shoulder meat away. Go bonded though you still have a lot of rifle there. Hard to immagine a better all around cartridge however.

All great advice guys, thanks! You know something else I have noticed, I also own a 26 and 30 Nosler but the 28 Nosler has more felt recoil than either of the others. In fact the 28 is on par with my 300 Remington UltraMag. My friend said "That is just 7mm for ya" but never having shot any other 7mm magnums I dunno. It is surprising how much smoother my 26 Nosler is using the SAME case and the 30 Nosler has less recoil shooting a 180gr bullet! All three rifles have the same Bell and Carlson stocks and the exact same muzzle brakes. I shot the 28 Nosler without a brake, NO THANK YOU, maybe I need to wear panties, I dunno, but it kicked like a mule, with the brake its no big deal, just interesting that it recoils more than the others. Go figure....
