280 Rem 700 custom shop

I have some QL data that is at .270 Win pressures. Running 64,250psi. The first set of QL loads are for 162 gr Hornady ELD-X bullet.

Is that brass or nickel cases? I dont want nickel, that stuff is junk and that's all I can ever find in winchester.

I've been running that Winchester nickel brass in my .280 Rem. and it works just fine. Frankly, I've never seen all the so called bad things about nickel brass, at least not since around 1970. I never used much before then but even then never ran into all the so-called problem keep harping on.

I've either got a slow lot of H4831 or a slow barrel. I'll work up a few loads with RL22 and 7828 next time out. Should tell me if I have a slow barrel or not. Go from there.

What ambient air temp are you shooting in?
If you're shooting in cold weather, it decreases your velocity.
Excessive oil in the barrel can reduce velocities, and increase pressures.
Burs and rough patches in your barrel can reduce velocities.
Maybe go back and recheck your powder charge, because it may be less than you expected.

Temp was 60 degrees and temp shouldn't effect hodgon extreme powder that much. I didn't clean the bore since I bought it from the guy, so I dont think oil is the issue either. Charges are individually weighed on an older RCBS balance beam, so thats not the issue either. I'll keep ya posted with how it does with RL22/IMR7828. Thanks for the feedback.

If I had to guess it is a slow lot of H4831. For what ever reason, I have the same issue when using H4831sc.

280 AI with a 24" barrel
160 grain AccuBond
CCI-BR2
Hornady AI cases
57.8 grains of one lot of H4831sc and 58.5 grains of H4831sc gives me about 2700 fps with great accuracy. Books indicate that I should get 2800-2900 fps.

Same 280 AI
150 grain Swift Scirocco's
CCI-BR2
Hornady AI cases
60-60.5 grains of RL-22 will put me up around 3000 fps. Which I think is about right - maybe 50 fps slower than anticipated but certainly not in the sub 150-200 fps that H4831sc provides.

Buddy of mine gets 2900+ FPS with 160 Trophy Bonded tip bullets in his 22” 700 Mountain Rifle with RL26 and QL data. Might want to check 26 out. I hear it’s like magical fairy dust for the 280. I run 26 in my 280 and ran it a 280AI with good accuracy and speed. I plan on getting a 8# keg of it after I burn up my IMR 4831.

I was thinking burs and copper fouling might be to blame as well. You might want to scrub the bore real well and possibly have a smith scope the bore. Maybe a light lapping would do it some good.

The rifle only had 2 boxes of shells through it, so it could be from burs, dont think 280s copper foul that much. But I should probably give it a good scrub anyway. I just picked up some of that good foam bore cleaner that also removes powder, lead, and carbon fouling. I got it for my 240 WBY because it has some carbon fouling issues I believe. The velocity jumped 100fps with the same load I have been using. Only difference is it has about 150 rounds through it without being cleaned.

Jorey, 7828, RL17, 22, 23, 26 along with about any others should do what you’re looking for. Surprised H4831 didn’t do a little better but there are plenty of good ones that should nudge 2900 with a 160. My thoughts are to use 270 Win data for a 280 with the 160. If the 270 will do it with the 150 a 280 should be doing about the same thing with a 160.

Good rifle though. That’s a nice packing gun!

If I wanted to shoot the 160g at 2600fps I think it would do bug holes all day, however 2600fps for a 160g out of a 280 is about worthless for what I want it for, I need at least 2800fps. 57.4 gives right at 2800fps, but it's warm, plus it doesnt seem like H4831 will shoot as good at 2800fps as it will at 2600fps looking at the target...I have 2# to burn up of H4831 so I'll probably see how it shoots with 5 rounds loaded at 57g and go from there. Will definitely be trying a different powder to add a 100fps, with less pressure, and shoot at the higher node. Any recommendations from some 280 shooters?

Yeah, With H4831 you're over max, powder should be compressed
and you're not getting the velocity you want.
So...Yes, you need to try another powder.
I like R22 in a 280, but would also recommend trying H4350.
