Have been working up deer loads for my Ruger 77 MK II in .280 Remington. I bought 140 grain Partitions and 139 SSTs to try for the upcoming deer season.

So far the winner is a load consisting of....

- Nosler brass
- 139 grain Hornady SST
- O.A.L. of 3.26"
- 56.5 grains of Hodgdon H4831SC
- CCI Large Rifle primers

With five loads to test I put them all into a 1" group at 100 yards.

I have had no luck with the Partitions yet with this rifle. Hoping to get back out next week to try two more loads.

I only had the chance to test one load for elk. All five shots were under an inch with a starting load of 51 grains of H4831SC and a 160 grain AccuBond. Ready to get working on some more loads since it seems the rilfe likes this bullet. I'm hoping I can get the speed up a bit more and maintain accuracy.

Anyway, I'm excited as a kid at Chritmas. Just started reloading recently and LOVE it!

The 280 Rem is one of my favorites.

For the 140 gr PT/AB/BT, try RL19. 57.0 grs MAX and well under MOA.

For the 160 gr PT/AB, try IMR4831. 54.0 grs shoots .400" at 100 yds and is a dandy elk load.

The more you shoot the 280 Rem, the more you are going to love it.

Thanks JD!

I have not tried the Reloader 19 with the 140s yet. I do have some 160 grain AB loaded up with R19 to try. Darn work, would much rather be going to the range tonight instead of to work

Yup, its more fun to spend $ than make $. Just ask my wife.

I'm having pretty good luck with RL-19 as well, but with some 130's.
Viht N-165 & 150gr SilverTiips give me under half inch @ 100.

I also have been working up some loads for my Rem 700 ltd in 280.
I haven't had great results with the AB's yet :( but i will keep trying.
Here is 4 round group that measured .625 with 53gr of RL-19, CCI 200, RP brass and 154gr Hornady interbonds.

I have a bunch of Deer rifles, 6mm Rem, 257 Roberts, 25-06 Rem, 270 Win, 308 Win etc, but every year I keep relying on my trusty 280 Rem. All my other rifles shoot good, but no matter how hard I try to take them into the field I keep reverting back to old reliable, the "Heat Seeker".

Mine is a #1B Ruger with a 26" barrel. I get excellent results from R-19, R-22, AA-3100 and H-4831sc, depending on the different bullets used, of course. R-22 works best for me with the 140 Partition, 56.8 gr and a GM210M primer with a Norma case. I haven't used the Nosler brass yet, but I will eventually. I'm just having trouble wearing my Norma stuff out first.

Funny thing, I've found great loads for various Nosler, Barnes and Sierra bullets, but for some reason I can't find the sweet spot for the 140 AB. I can get just about anything else I want to shoot great in this rifle, BTs, Partitions, Gamekings, TSX, but the 140 AB keeps eluding me.

I'll get it eventually. The search is half the fun.

Love the 280 Rem !!

My wifes Ruger M77 all weather 280 likes 57 grs of RL 19 with 140 partitions it groups under an .5 @ 100

I use 150 grain Ballistic Tip, 55.5 grain IMR 4831. Velocity is around 2900 fps. My rifle is an Argentine Mauser Model 1909 with 24" Douglas XX barrel.

Five shot group at 100 yards

TScottW99,

As you can see by the replys, RL19 is an excellent choice with the
140 gr bullets.

Well it's official. I have given up on Partitions. Well for now anyway. I only have two powders at the moment to try and my gun hates the 140 grain Partition with my two powders.

Good news is I have found a sweet elk load with the 160 grain AccuBond and RL 19.

Thanks for everyones help!!!

What powder/loads did you try with the 140 gr PT's?

JD338

H4831sc & RL 19. I plan on trying RL22 later on but was short on time and money when starting this.

The H4831sc and Hornady SST interlocks gave me excellent groups and the RL19 & H4831sc gave excellent groups with the 160 grain Accubonds.

57.0 grs RL19 with the 140 gr bullets seems to be the load for several guys. Just wondering if you tried this combo.

Glad to hear you have a good load with the 160 gr AB, may not need to go with the 140 gr PT.

Your H4831sc load is very close to mine. My best loads w/ 140gr or 160gr bullets have come using IMR7828 or 7828ssc. It's magic in my 23" bbl. 280. I am getting 3000fps from the 140gr NABS or NPs w/ sub moa accuracy. The 160grs move along @ 2800fps+ w/ sim. accuracy. I was sighting in last weekend, for my upcoming elk hunt, & shot some off shooting sticks. I managed to put three of the 160gr NPs into 1" at 200yds sitting off the sticks.
With 160gr NPs it is my backup elk rifle but it is my primary deer/antelope slayer w/ 140gr-145gr bullets. Great cartridge especially in really lt.wt. rifles.
