280 remington velocity

i've ran across a good deal on a 26" .280 barrel for my t/c encore. i'm wondering what kind of velocities are possible with 140s, 150s and 160s? seems like from looking at load data that the .280 shoots no faster then the 270.

Every barrel is different so YMMV but I would think you should be able to get your 280 Rem over 3000 fps with the 140 gr and 2800 fps with the 160 gr bullets.
I would focus on accuracy and be happy with what ever the velocity is. The 280 Rem is a fantastic cartridge.

I have an Encore pro-hunter in 280 rem, I'm getting 3,000 fps muzzle vel with 140 BT's and 2980 fps with 140 gr AB's and 2795 fps with a 160 gr sierra gameking. It's my favorite caliber to hunt with! The only thing I'd think twice a bout going after with it would be an Alaskan Brown bear?

3000 fps with a 26 inch barrel would not be unusual with the 280 Rem. You may get that much with the 150s as well. I'm not at my home computer, so I don't have QuickLOAD to project a muzzle velocity. I'll try to remember when I get home to check this.

I cannot tell you what 150's or 160's will give you in your rifle, the only thing I ever shot in my .280 was 140 gr. Partitions. My Remington Mountain Rifle only had a 22" barrel and my load using IMR4350 gave me 2940 fps without any pressure signs.

I'm getting 3000 fps out of a 22 inch barreled Remington 700 with 139 Hornady BTSPs and H4831SC.

YMMV but then again,it's a 280 and the cool factor has to kick in :mrgreen:

A 140 grain AB and a max charge of RL19 will move close to 3100 fps in a 26 inch barrel. A 150 grain BST and a max charge of RL19 will generate just below 3000 fps. A 160 grain AB and a stiff charge of RL19 will yield almost 2900 fps. What more could an individual want?

I tried many powders in my browning A-bolt with a 22" barrel and 140gr accubonds and never got much over 2850fps. This was one rifle, results from others may be much faster. I got great accuracy, often under 1/2" but I wanted a little more speed. I ended up selling it and got a 270WSM A-bolt that gave the same accuracy and settled on a load that gave a very consistent 3030fps. It has a 23" barrel also.

The 280 is a great round but I think it needs at least 24" of barrel for good velocity. A 26" 280 should be excellent.
