Question for y’all, I like the not so popular rifle calibers, I have a few 7-08s but have always been intrigued by the 284 win.
Can you get the full performance of a 284 in a 22” barrel? Anyone have experience with the 284? I have access to a couple hundred 284 brass. Or do I just stick with the 7-08?

The 284 is one of my favourite cartridges. It is the ballistic twin of the 280 Rem. My 284 wears a 22 inch tube, and it works just fine.

I never really paid much attention to the 284 Win but this thread made me take notice. Pretty impressive round.

What is your definition of "Full-Performance ?"
I have shot 14", 15", 18", and 30" barrels chambered in the 284 Winchester.
Killing goals and max distance?
Bullet weight you have in mind?
Short, long or single-shot action?

I guess what I mean would I be handicapping the 284 with a 22' barrel, or would it just be more or less a 7-08 with that barrel length. the highest bullet weight would be 162 but most likely I would stick with 140-154 weights. I have a tikka 7-08 I thought I could rechamber or spin a new barrel on a M700 LA. I have a 280 AI that loves the 160 AB and is pushing them at 3065 so it wouldn’t likely replace that gun.

It comes down to what performance level you want.
A 22" 284 in the right hands is capable of elk beyond 800 yards.
It won't outrun a 280AI, but it is close to the 280 Rem

Just wanting a 284 is a good enough reason to get one! Why? Because you can!
I don't believe that you would find yourself handicapped by having it in a 22" barrel.
If you went with a 140 gr in your 7mm-08, a 150 gr in your 284 and a 162 gr in your 280AI, you would have the spectrum of performance covered in the 7mm caliber. Also gives you a nice range of performance choice for various species for various environments to hunt game in.
(I have done a similar thing; a 20" barreled 7mm-08 on a lever action for 140 gr ammunition for brush hunts for deer, a 24" barreled (factory barrel) 280 Rem in a bolt action for 150 gr ammo for more open terrain for deer, caribou, moose and elk, and a 24" barreled bolt action in 7MM STW for 160 gr ammo (rifle built by someone else; but produces 3222 fps w/ 160 gr SGK and AB's so really didn't need a 26" barrel to obtain velocity) for open fields, prairie and mountain alpine hunting antelope, mountain game and elk.)

I doubt the 284 Winchester is gonna come back as a mainstream cartridge but that doesn't mean it's not very good. Like the 257 Roberts it goes from a very useable and nice cartridge to a different animal when it's allowed to breathe and not stuffed into a short action like many of them were. A short fat powder column that lends itself to consistency and will run right with a 280 AI when it's allowed to be loaded out long and cranked up. What's not to like about something like that?
