Verified the 175ABLR load today - looks pretty good. I shot my best ever group today and with a standard M70 trigger. I shot some very promising groups with the 195gr Berger today. I pierced a primer today at 87.5gr RL33. Bolt was a little stiff and primer was only just beginning to flatten. It nice to know that the design of the action works! The gas escaped into magazine and the vent hole. I was wearing safety glasses. First time I've ever punched a primer. Any other reasons a primer would be punctured besides pressure?
The 28 is shooting well and next time out I'll adjust OAL of the Berger load to see if I can draw them in a little.

With that 175 at 3170+ I'd have a hard time wanting to use more of the barrel for much else.

You secured some valuable intel today. I concur that it would be hard to ignore the combination of accuracy and velocity witnessed with the 175 grain ABLR load.

+1 load the 175 ABLR and look no further. Not sure why you punched the primer, but with that much powder capacity I'd look at the firing pin and see that's the issue?

Either Berger load will work as well. Kevin is correct in suggesting mechanical reasons for the pierced primer. How much does the shoulder move forward after the first firing of the cartridge?

Scotty,
I'm with you on that idea! My load development at this this point has taken a total of 72 rounds and that included sight in. Q/L has been a big help. I need to take it long and verify drops and I'll be done.

Mike,
I haven't measured the cases yet but my feeling is not much. I neck sized the cases after the first firing and they are fitting the chamber very snugly. I pierced the first primer on unfired brass with a near max/max load under the 195gr Berger. The second one happened on a mid level load with 175 ABLR and neck sized brass that I chrono'd previously at 3030fps - 4 grains below max. The chrono read 3360 on the pierced primer load :?: At the point I quit! I'll take a look at the chamber and bolt/firing pin this weekend. It might have something to do with pin protrusion.? We'll see.

Armed with that information, I'm inclined to suggest it is an issue with the firing pin. Should be a simple fix if that is in fact the situation.
