300 win mag, weatherby vangaurd. magazine of 3.5". it also has a deep throat 180gr ETIP is .005 off the lands at 3.495" so my starting OAL is 3.485". powder is H1000, federal LR magnum primers. 20" barrel. 80gr powder charge gives 100%+ case capacity with this bullet seating depth, slight compression. anyone care to guess on velocity

this gun has never shot a good group with any load/bullet combo. so i had 4" cut off the barrel and a target crown cut. i tested 5 loads yesterday. 150gr AccuBond poor, 165gr AccuBond has potential, 190 gr smk 1 1/4", 180gr AccuBond flyer, 180gr etip is working. 2 4 shot groups where in a 1 1/4". velocity 2892fps 8 shot average 18fps average deviation. so cutting 4" off the barrel using h1000 has no real effect in velocity loss, but i gained in accuracy by 1" plus. in other powders i lost approx 100 fps average so 25fps average per 1" of this barrel. now i have a remington model 7 sized rifle that shoots 180gr etips at near 2900fps accuritely a win win situation. on my final test load the 165 AccuBond it shot 2 into 1/2" then i had scope failure. simmons master series 2.8-10x44 the focus ring has two plastic buttons that ride in a groove, these sheared. i loved this scope right up to that point. simmons has authorized a new replacement scope. i HOPE they have fixed this issue on the new ones

Sounds like you have a winner. I bet there was an issue with the crown on the barrel initially, and you've fixed that and made it into a real handy rifle. You're getting good velocity from the E-Tips using H1000. What process did you use to work them up? Did you max at Nosler's published mid-load as they suggest, or what? (I'm loading some currently for two different rifles and want some vicarious experience prior to shooting them).

........................Baltz...............You cut 4" of barrel off a 300 Winny????? You bad boy you!   That`s ok though, you`re not losing hardly anything! You just need to experiment as much as possible to find some very accurate loadings.............With a 180 gr. bullet, your velocity with 80.0 grains of H-1000 with your 20" tube, I`ll guess to be at about 2950 fps...........I`ve always said that in most cases, a 15 fps. to 30 fps. loss in velocity, for every inch of reduced barrel length, is about right on!..........The chrony results from my 300 WSM 16.5" er shorty barrel also back that up! In my case, depending on the loads, only about a 3.5 to a 4.5% in overall loss from a full length 24". Your percentage of loss should be even lower!...........Also! You may want to try perhaps a little faster burner than H-1000, using less grains while maintaining about the same velocity; like some Rel 19, some 4350, or some IMR 4007. May work better in burning more efficiently in that shorter barrel..........I am really looking forward to getting my hands on some of that new Rel #17 which you may also want to try! Not available yet but in the 300 WSM`s anyway, it is suppose to out perform all others with approx. the same burn rate and be extremely accurate as well.............

80 gr of h1000 is the load that is working with the 180gr etip (81gr is max in a couple books i have for the 180gr weight) and the 190gr hpbt match. both are compressed loads. no excessive pressure signs in my rifle but your milage may vary. i have tried different powders and bullet weights with this cut barrel. h4850, h4831, re22. the 165gr AccuBond with re22 was the best load before i cut and recrowned (under 2") but with the scope failure happening durring my test of this load, i'll have to wait for the new scope to retest the 165

In another post didn't you mention something about getting a really sweet elk tag?? Maybe it's time for something with a gold ring?

don't be poking at me there :p when the atec failed, i was thinking exactly along the same lines. but the $300 additional dollars it would have cost at the time was a deal breaker. it is on it's way to simmons for a new replacement. i might burn some plastic money to get a new scope. signature select burris 3-12x44 matte ballistic plex, or a zeiss mc conquest 3.5-10x44

Yep, I understand the too many idea's and not enough money delima. :( I think most of us here have had some kind of experience similar to yours. Second tier scope on a rifle with first tier recoil.....and the recoil won!! :? How many rounds on that .300 mag did it take before the scope failed?

I sure at somepoint, budget allowing, the Zeiss or Burris would make a nice addition to the rifle. 8)

As for matching a powder to the new shorter barrel, I'm in the same camp as Big Squeeze.....4831/RL22 might be good choices IF you were concerned about velocity. Of course if those accubonds started shooting 1/2" groups over H1000, I'd be inclined to call it a day

new scope came today. the scope that failed was a compact, the scope that replaced it is a standard length scope. same exact model number. so after digging through my parts i found a set of redfield rings and mounts. had to shelve the weaver silver offset rings and mounts from the compact scope setup. ready to test again
