Has anyone tried these on whitetails.
Gun has 1:10 twist. l am looking to reduce recoil, or will it be driven too fast for deer hunting, and not perform like the 165's that I have been using.

I have used the .308 Caliber 125gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips in both the .30-30 Winchester (@ 2400 FPS) and the .30-30 Ackley Improved (@ 2680 FPS) in T/C Contender Super 14 Handguns with great results. I have shot several Deer with this bullet in Handguns and all have been one shot kills.

However I think if driven to max velocity in a .30-06 Rifle these bullets will not provide much penetration like they do at Handgun Velocities. I recently loaded some of these bullets for a buddies son in a .30-06, but I used a light load of H-4895 to keep both velocity and recoil down. Well my buddies son got his first deer ever with this load. He shot a little high and hit the doe square in the back bone. The bullet did not exit, but rather blew up in the spine, obviously putting the deer down in her tracks.

That is the only experience I have had with the .308 Caliber 125gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips. I think it is a great bullet at Handgun Velocities. Maybe someone with more experience with this bullet will chime in here with more info.

The 30 cal 125 gr BT is a game bullet, not designed for varmints.
You need to keep impact velocities below 3000 fps.
For hard angle shots, more bullet weight might be more desireable.

In general, a 125 gr bullet is considered a varmint bullet in 30 cal.
If you look at the Nosler offering, varmint bullets are 20 cal, 22 cal,
243 cal 55 gr and 70 gr, 257 cal 85 gr. The BT game bullets, which have a thicker jacket are 243 cal 95 gr, 257 100 gr, and up.

Also consider the comments from some of the others that have actually used the 125 gr BT on deer and goats with good results. I have a buddy who loads the 125 gr BT in a 30-30 for his daughter. She has taken 2 WT deer, one was a doe at around 220 yds and the bullet exit hole was the size of a quarter.

The 125 gr BT works on deer, you just need to keep the impact velocity
under 3000 fps.
