I finally got my Talleys mounted up to the new 700Ti I bought a few weeks back. i am really starting to like H4831 with 180's so I figured I would give it a run with 165's. I know it's probably too slow but I have always had great accuracy results. I did no brass prep other than size, trim, chamfer, this is 5x fired brass also from another rifle. I did not find any particular seating depth from the lands. This gun is long throated, a 165 is BARELY in the neck to touch the lands. I did not change my seating die from my 180 depth on another rifle.

WW Brass 5x fired

H4831 - 61grs
CCI200

I fired one fouler and then tried for a group. I allowed around 2min cooling time between rounds, it is 85 degrees right now.

I think I can tweek the charge to tighten it up, but if not, oh well. I know it's only 1 group, but it's a pretty good group for simply loading 3 rounds and shooting them at paper at 100yds. I will break out the calipers later. Sorry for the cell phone pics.

It may be only one group, but it is certainly encouraging. Good job on the ammunition and the shooting, Heath.

I don't figure it's real fast.

I shot a 2nd group, it did not match the 1st. :(

1st 3 shots - .632" center to center
2nd 3 shots - .659" center to center

I'll run it across the screens in a bit.

This one may be different, but neither of my other /06's likes imr4350 with 165's or 180's. I got good results with 150's but 165+ looked like patterns more than groups.

The store that sells reloading stuff is supposed to be getting some H4350 and that is on the to buy list if it ever shows.

3 shots across my chrono gave an average of 2701fps with the 165+61grs H4831. Not smoking fast but I would think suffecient? I loaded up 3 rounds with 62grs H4831 and fired them at 100yds, a sub .7" group was found on target. I will run that across the screen later on. I would think it should be near 2800fps, but I don't know.

In all honesty, repeatble .6" groups from a 6lb 2oz 30/06 with 165's@ 2700fps should be enough for what I need. All I am after is whitetails and 99.99% of my shots are under 100yds.

Heath, with this load, we never had an issue with accuracy, just velocity. Boring reliable accuracy. At 100 yards, a white tail will never know the difference, and neither will you when you bite into the steak. You also have the makings for a good 180gr BT load. Not that a whitetail needs anything that big, but if you ever wanted to use that rifle for something larger, it's something to keep in mind.

Heath,
My 30-06 is a Remington 700 22" barrel, I'm running 59.0 H4350 powder with a 165 Ballistic Tip using CCI250 Mag Primers. Getting tight groups for the most part. Velocity is 2774-2800 fps. H4350 is very consistent powder. I will use this load for Whitetails here in Tennessee. I'm sure it will hammer Whitetails if I do my part. Also Heath, I seated the bullet the length of the magazine as a starting point, then reduced the length, currently I'm at 3.795 off the ojive.

Thanks for the info Don, I will have to look into that load if I ever get my hands on H4350.

Heath,
Check Midway USA, Bass Pro or Cabelas if you don't mind the Haz. Mat fee.

Mid South Shooters Supply in Tennessee may have it too.

Nice shooting Heath! It looks like that rifle is a keeper! Scotty

I agree.

Personally if I found one 180 grain load at 2700 fps or better and sub moa I would use it for everything.

I am a firm believer in the KISS method.

I am going to chrono 62grs and 63grs + 165's today if weather allows it.

I have not shot it from this rifle, but my other 2 '06's shoot sub MOA with 59grs H4831 and a 180NBT. I chrono'd it from my 22" barreled Savage and got 2737fps.

I was playing with these 165's because I have a couple of boxes. The 180's are next up to bat from this '06.

165 NBT
WW Brass
CCI200
62grs H4831
2731fps

165NBT
WW Brass
CCI200
63grs H4831
2754fps

I have not shot 63grs for a group yet, 62grs is sub MOA.

imr4350+165NBT

58.0grs - 3 shots = 1.090"
58.0grs - 3 shots = 1.261"
58.5grs - 3 shots = 1.641"

Going to try 57.5grs imr4350 and then chrono it.

I have read that imr4350 is temp sensative, true/not true?

I just reread this, that is LONG! I don't have mine ran out that far yet.

How much bullet you still got in the case?

Shot 62grs H4831 + 165 NBT again today and got 3 shots in .9". I am just going to run this load uptil I run out of 165's, its plenty accurate and went 2750fps from a new batch of powder.

I shot some 165 NAB's at the same length as the NBT's and 62grs H4831, I think the group was 1.7", that sucks.

Heath,
I have bullet completely in the case neck just a hair more into the case. I started there because even at that length I'm still unbelievably far away from the lands. Initially started at 3.800 then reduced to 3.795 off the ojive. I'm able to load up to 60 grains of H4350 with the 165 BT or AccuBond with no pressure signs. I get my best results in the 58.0, 58.5 and 59.0 charge levels. Velocities range between 2750-2840 with a 22" barrel.
I'm still in the refining stages with this load. I got the charge levels down, now to play with seating depths a little to tweak the groups. I did however experience a bit of velocity gain with Accubonds, about 40 fps faster.

Your H4831 load looks good, seating adjustment could tighten the groups.
