Anyone loading a 30-06 AI?

My buddy has a custom M700 blueprinted action, Tubb recoil lug, 26" Hart #5 flutted barrel chambered in 30-06 AI. He is looking for load data with 150 gr, 165 gr and 180 gr bullets. He really wants to use the 165 gr AB for antelope and cow elk.

Any loads is greatly appreciated.

Good question. The only thing I had archived was in speer manual number 6, copyright-1964. It has data from a 26 inch barrel using rem cases and primers and a 1-10 twist. 4350 and 4831 were the two top powders in those days. The book says use the slowest powder. I guess 4350 was it back then. Anyhow they listed 4350 for the 165 speer bullet at 59 grains for 2991. Also listed 63 gr. of 4831 for 2959. The article in the book stressed slow burning.

Jim, here are some scans out of my Sierra Manual that may assist you. Scotty

Thanks Scotty, this will be a big help for my buddy.

Nice job JohnB. You should of seen how high I jumped off the Easy chair when I saw your post on nosler-5 having load data. I,m calling a fouler shot on on my first post . I missed good that time.

I know, looking for additional info. My buddy has been loading H4831 and the speeds are low.
I am thinking IMR 4350, IMR 4064 and RL 19 would get him to 3000 fps with the 165-168 bt bullets.

I'll have to say it is a little disheartening to see a faster load in Nosler's standard 30-06 data for 165 to 168 grains. I don't have any experience with the 30-06 AI, but it does look like IMR 4350 might get you there. I wouldn't rule out H4350 either. Another thing I thought of, German Salazar has an article on his site titled 30-06 update, in this article he discusses the case capacity of different types of 30-06 brass. He found that Norma brass was the lightest by about 10 grains and this translated into about 2 grains more powder capacity. That extra capacity might help get you to 3000.

Jim I'd about guarantee that Hunter would be Mike's friend if you're looking for 3k w/ a 165 in the AI. That stuff is about as slow as RL19, but has better load density.

It also has produced wonderful accuracy in my mountain-weight '06.

If I were you I'd email Johan Loubser at ramshot and get data, or just have Mike start w/ RS's max loads for the standard '06.

Jim, do you think RL22 would be a good one. Seems like if it works with the 280 well, it should work decently in the 30-06AI? If H4831 is a little slow it seems like RL22 always betters it, speed wise at least. Just wondering. Scotty

JD, I've never loaded for the 30.06AI, but here are the two places I would start:

Cartridge : .30-06 Ack Imp

QL shows an unreasonably low max pressure of 58k psi the the 30.06AI. I'd load it up to what I felt the action was capable of.

A 180gr BT at 3,000 FPS would be very effective on anything from Antelope to Elk.

Thanks fellas.
My buddy loaded up RL 17 and hit the speeds he was looking for.
The 165 gr Hornady SST went 3025 fps ES 4 SD 2 and .5 MOA at 200 yds. I think he is set to go!
He also shot some 150 gr loads and was around 3140 fps.
Scotty, you nailed it buddy! RL 17 is the ticket in the 30-06 AI.

Wow, those sound like some great loads Jim! I would be very happy with that kinda speed! Scotty

Here is a picture of his rig...

That 30-06AI looks to be all business Jim. Can't see anything not to like about that combo... That is just one of those rifles that looks like it is going to get carried everywhere!

Brian, if your watching this thread, that would be the set up to have for your 264-35Whelen (AI'ed of course)! Scotty

I'm I watching this thread? Are you kidding me? The thread is about an AIed rifle  Very interesting stuff!

Nice rifle, Nice load. RL 17 seems to be a great powder for many applications. Congratulations guys.

JohnB

I'm curious how how much would you really gain over the regular 30-06 in real life at similar pressures. I'm sure you all know that guys with wildcats generally hot rod them to the max :) Since there are more limited choices in left hand guns a 30-06 AI looks pretty interesting to me.

Gerry,

My buddy is not running MAX loads in his 30-06 AI but is getting a nice step up from standard 30-06 loads. He is also using Lapua brass so I am guessing he is going to get excellent case life.
