30-06 H4831sc instead of H4350

I am not getting the best consistent fps when using H4350 for 30-06 and 165gr Interlocks which of course is contributing to not the best groups. Deviation can be as much as 50 FPS now matter how careful I am with prep and reloads. Using Fed210 primers and Remington brass.

Whenever I use H4831, miracles happen. Last night with a Kimber 300 Win Mag fps was as little as 1-5 fps. My 338 win mag is the same way.

Has anyone ever used H4831sc with thier 30-06 loads?

H4831 is just not fast enough to deliver good velocities with the 165gr class bullets. If you neeed something different the 4350, I'd try RL19.

I would try IMR-4350 which is NOT the same as H4350. IMR-4350 is a pretty standard powder for the 06. Might try winchester primers to see what they can do for ya, that is what I run in my 06.

You could also look to reloader 15 or IMR-4064 along with H-414/Win 760. Personally I prefer Reloader 15 in Win brass with Win primers start at 49 grains and work up depending on your rifle and your bullet of choice you will probably be at a max load in the 52-53 grain range perhaps a bit more or a bit less. You can also try varget if you have some as it is in the same burn range as Reloader 15 and 4064.

I'm curious, as I get very consistent velocities from H4350 - and sub-half-minute accuracy out to 200yds - in my 30-06, with 165/168gr Ballistic Tips. I'm using WLR primers, though I recently ran out and will try CCI next. Perhaps if you're getting a "good" velocity from the H4350 you could try a primer switch?

Also, what charge are you using? Generally, following Hodgdon's data for 165gr bullets, you could work up to 57-59gr as a max load (work up in your rifle, obviously) of H4350, and many folks I know are getting good velocity and accuracy from that particular load range. I know I am.

H4350 seems to like the CCI200's in .06 sized cases.

Try r-17, great alternative to h-4350, I am using 57 grns for 2900 fps with Barnes 150 ttsx.

I shoot H4350 in my 30-06 using 165 Ballistic tips. My load is with Win. Brass and CCI250 Mag Primers. I get very good consistency. Velocity is 2830 fps from a 22" barrel. Gun is Rem 700.
This load will shoot .442 groups if I do my part. I seated the bullet out just till the loaded shell fit the Magazine and tweaked it from there.

I tried Ramshot Hunter at 61.0 with a CCI250 Primer with same components and got 2900 fps. Haven't been able to re-visit that powder since then but plan on it this Fall sometime.

I am getting great velocities and no pressure.
I have some cci200s and I also have IMR4350.

Your IMR4350 suggestion is starting to make me think and remember. Uh oh. Last year, I had some issues with a Savage 30-06 and with guess what. H4350. That is why I have some IMR4350. I went to that and got much better accuracy and ended up using that for that hunters reloads. I am drinking some of that "kool-aid" about temp insensitive powder and thus why I first go to the H4350. :wink:

I also went out and bought a box of the 165 gr Interlock "flat base" SP bullets. We are currently working with the BTSPs. Will test that out as well.

Ah I see some thoughts on RL 17 and also magnum primers. Both topics I have also contemplated. This might be a long weekend in testing. I want to get the very best combination for this camp hunter's rifle. thanks again.

338win, Glad to help. I've already wasted that powder so you don't have to!

Remember, save you Mag primers for the ball powder. If you try some H414/W760, be sure and use a match/mag primer. No need for the mag primers with a stick powder and a medium sized case.

I shoot 165's + 62grs H4831 for 2750fps. Not the fastest but the spreads are low and it is very accurate.

As already mentioned, 4831 is pretty slow in the 30-06 with light and mid weight bullets. You would have better luck switching to IMR 4064 or RL 19/22 powders if IMR/H 4350 is not getting you where you want to be.

I've had great results from H4350 & 165 gr bullets from my beat up ol' .30-06. It's one of the best powder/bullet combos I've run in that old rifle. I wonder if something is wrong with your particular lot of H4350? It's well known as an accurate powder, and commonly used in several cartridges by long-range competitors.

Did use H4831 with 180 gr bullets several years ago - with impressive accuracy, but modest velocity.

I have been shooting 57.5 gr of IMR 4350 with a BR2 primer for so long that I can not remember when I started but it has always given me about 2860 fps and sub-MOA (down to .2 inch) groups.

Ramshot Hunter gave me some impressive velocity last Fall. Got 2900 fps with 61.0 grains and 165 Ballistic Tip. Two shot test group cut each other. Great powder so far.
