Hello All,
I'm a newbie to the forum and I have a T/C Encore .30-06. I am thinking of a caribou hunt next fall and would like to get some recommendations for an accurate load that would get the job done. Thanks

Welcome to the forum.
I would look at the 165 gr AB or BT.

JD338

I have never hunted them but they say thay are not any harder to kill that a WT deer so I would go with a 150 or 165 gr ballistic tip or AccuBond.

FWIW, I shot 2 bull Caribou in Quebec Canada with a 280 Remington using 140 gr BT's. Both were quartering on shots, 250 yds and 225 yds. The 140 gr BT entered front shoulders and exited the off side ribs with exit holes the size of quarters.
My buddy used my 257 Roberts with 115 gr BTs. He shot one bull at 220 yds and a second one at around 40 yds. The 115 gr BT exited both caribou, again with exits about the size of quarters.

Caribou die pretty quick if you hit them right. The 165 gr offers some nice ballistics in the 30-06.
One last point to consider is the wind. Up on the open tundra, the wind is always blowing. You might want to consider a 180 gr AB or BT as it will buck the wind better than a lighter bullet.

Make sure you do your homework on your outfitter, there are some good ones and there are some.....

Pick an outfitter that actually owns their own planes. Many will offer to move you to a different location if there are no caribou. But if the outfitter doesn't have their own planes and is relying on another with planes and they are moving their own hunters, you will get to do a lot of fishing.

Welcome fellow Canuck

Absolutely agree, 165 AB & H4350. You also have the advantage of being able to customize your COAL.

I would have said to use the 165 AccuBond as well. Look into Jack Hume Adventures if you are still looking for an outfitter. He is my cousin, and has a very good reputation. I have seen him guide many of the big name TV hunters in the past.

Thank you all for your great advice on not only the load but also regarding selecting an outfitter.

A 150 gr to 165 gr Ballistic tip would be more than adequate. The Caribou in the east are not as big as those found in the west. Most shots will be in the 100-200 yard range.

I have seen a few taken, and it does not seem that it takes much to drop a caribou (they are definitely not as "tough" as the whitetails I am more familiar with).

In the community I currently live in (Pangnirtung, Nunavut), the most popular calibers for caribou seem to be 223's and 22-250's - a little less gun than I would be comfortable with, but the local Inuit know sure know how to use em effectively. That said, 150-165 gr Ballistic tips would be more than adequate.
