30-06 with RL22 and 165 Ballistic Tips

I already had a load worked up with H4350 so I did not clock them, but the more powder the 165 ABs had under them the better they shot. I stopped at 60 grains and they were easily under an inch; I'm confident that had I bothered to play with seating depth I could have gotten a very good group. I may go back to it yet.

DON,

The 165 gr BT is the perfect bullet in the 30-06 for WT deer.
IMR 4350, RL 22 or RL 17 would be my pick of powders.

JD,
I have been messing around with H4350, Think I'm going to try RL17 this week if I can get my hands on some.

Don

I've had good results with 180's and RL-22, but I don't recall using it with 165's. With the 180's it was good; sub MOA at about 2700 fps.

With the 165's I get good results with H4350. 2750 fps with less-than-max charges and sub moa accuracy. The Ballistic Tips are great hunting bullets, very accurate.

So, I've sort of danced around your RL-22/165 combo...

Guy,
That's alright, I started this topic with RL22 but since then learned about RL17. I think RL17 listed with the 165 may be worth a try. I hear it gives nice velocities. But I'm still working with H4350 as well. I've always had good success with Alliant powders.

Don

I just bought some RL17 Powder. Going to give it a try with the 165 Ballistic Tip.
We'll see what it does this week-end hopefully. :)

Don keep us posted. Ive used RL 22 with 165 accubonds. I worked up to 63 grains of powder but it seemed I hit a wall with it. 61 through 63 grains I was getting very little gain 100 fps or less. With 61 grains I had a measured group of .59" at 100 yards with a velocity of 2631.

I got much better results with H4350. However this is just my current rifle. I had another rifle with the same above load of RL 22 )63 grains I was getting almost 3000 fps on average.

I will let you know with the results. I'm hoping to get 2800 fps. I'm at max listed charge now with H4350 getting 2740 fps or so. No pressure signs good and clean. I'm happy with H4350 powder, giving RL17 a try. It's going to be between these two powders in the end.

Don

Don, with 59.5 grains, I've gotten 2900 out of more then one rifle with that combination.
What rifle and brass are you using?

I am using a Remington 700 with 22" Barrel.
Winchester Brass although I have Remington Brass as well available.
CCI BR-2 Primers

Are you referring to H4350 or RL17 Powder?

Don

I double checked, it was 59gr H4350, 165gr Nosler BT's win brass, cci 250 primers. With a 22" barrel on a Winchester model 70 we were getting 2966fps. I noticed that load is not in the new books....

Hey POP, what does that look like on quick load???

Currently I'm getting 2,774 fps average from 4-Shots fired at listed max charge 59.0 H4350.
Like I said Rem 700 22" Barrel. I'm using re-sized Winchester Brass.

Don

59 grains of H4350 is over pressure by slightly more than 3000 psi under SAAMI standards. 58 grains brings it back within safe limits. This assumes that your case meets SAAMI specs. In fact, if the case capacity is somewhat greater, it might allow for the extra charge. Keep one other factor in mind when considering QL projections: all loads assume use of the "coolest" primer possible. Consequently, use of a primer with greater brisance will of necessity result in a measurable increase in pressure.

Using the CCI250 primer is pretty hot with that charge I think, all the reason I use the BR-2.

That looks like a smokin' load! It will make for one heck of a deer load!

Hodgdon still lists that load in their current data, and I've used it too. Mighty fine way to shove a .30 cal, 165 gr bullet downrange!

I was at the Range today. Temp.was 71.0-degrees, winds about 10 mph. 100 yd Target

I loaded RL17 for the 30-06, 2 shots each initially to check velocity and groups to see if there was any promise for this powder. Following are the loads and results:

Rifle: Remington 700 22" barrel

165 Ballistic Tip
Winchester Cases, neck sized only
CCI BR2 Primer
55.5 RL17 Powder
2640 fps

Same as above
56.5 RL17 Powder *This is the listed max charge according to Alliant website
2700 fps

Same as above
57.5 RL17 Powder
2760 fps

Bullets were seated .20 from lands

Summary: I worked up in steps. No pressure signs were present, very clean loads. Groups for the first two were not very good, last load both shots measured 1/2" outside to outside of the bullets holes. The last load had 10 fps difference with two shots fired.

I'm still working with H4350 as it too has great potential from my last range trip. My best velocity was 2774 fps with 2-shots measuring 1/2" center to center.
