30/06

H4350 and Reloder 22 both have worked for me.. H4350 gives me a little less velocity but is more temperature stable than Reloder 22. Velocity loss seems to be an interesting point but so far insignificant to me. Good luck.. Rol

Boomer, I use 56.5 grains H4350 with 180 PTs and CCI 200 primers. Took this bull last year.

Not a huge bull, but my first 6x6.

That's a nice bull Joe! Anymore, any bull is a nice one, the elk over here where I live don't get the invisible paint washed off of them until about Christmas time :(

I too use H4350 for just about any load in my .30-06 but have also gotten pleasant results with W760, H414 and IMR 4064.

Has anyone tried the old standard load of 49.5 grains of 4064 with the 180 grain bullets? I am not sure if you best 2700 fps (even in a 24") tube but there is little muzzle blast and lesser felt recoil and its a good accurate load.

55 grains of H or IMR 4350 and 180 grain bullets has been the standard go to load for over 50 years for many people I hunt and shoot with. I typically use a 165 grain Partition for most of my hunting but am not at all ashamed to switch to a 180 when I need to.

Very nice bull, wonder how many the old, obsolete, no CDI (chicks dig it) cartridge has put in the salt.

I've used 57gr IMR 4350 and H4350 with the 180 sooo many times! It seldom (depending upon the rifle, of course) disappoints. The 30-06 is just one of those cartridges that kills way out of proportion to its size! I used 61 gr R22/200 Nosler Partition in one 24" Mod 700 CDL that was just awesome! I am currently waiting on my Sako AV 30-06 to finally get it together ( have a Timney trigger ordered for it) and I will definitely try those 200 PTs in it. I also bought a wad of the 150PT "blemished" bullets that I will use with 59gr IMR 4350 and a couple others. It would be easy to live the rest of One's Life with a 30-06! Good luck to you Pard! Jim

I use Hunter for 180 Partitions from my T3. Excellent accuracy and velocity.

Google "Getting the most out of your .30-06" by John Barsness.

I cannot seem to get any link that I have "googled" for this article to open up. Does anyone have a .pdf they could email me of it? I really want to read this but my browser just says 404 Not Found every time I click on any link for it.

Thanks

Thank you!

That's a fine article too but the one I am looking for is by John Barsness

Getting the Most out of your .30-06.

Please link if you have it.

Can't get any of the 24 hour campfire links to get to the article.

I am running 55.0grs of H4350 and 180gr NP's in an older Win Mod 70 30-06 and have around a 1" group with 5 shots. I am also getting 2618fps velocity with that load. I ran up higher, but had pressure signs before the groups would start tightening up again. I have also used IMR4350 with 55.5grs and same bullet with just about the exact sized groupings.

Thanks for posting that link. The link I had to the same article, on 24Hour Campfire, doesn't work anymore.

Excellent article on tailoring the .30-06 to your hunting needs... Light bullets to heavy!

And German Salazar is a very skilled marksman. He did a fine job of building up a .30-06 match rifle not too many years ago. I remember reading that very article as well. His is mostly for long-range target shooting, but has information applicable to the hunting world as well.

The .30-06 is such a terrific all-around big game cartridge! (y)

Reading some of his stuff got me to thinking to 30-06 isn't as moribund as I had believed.

For the record, my pet load for the '06 is 55.6 grns. of IMR 4350 topped off with the 165 grn. NPT. Not super fast in my 700 BDL but consistently gives me <MOA groups at 100 yds. and has more than enough "stuff" to hunt anything in my neck of the woods.
