Just bought a new marlin 336W. looking for a good load. already have RL 15, RL 17,IMR 4064. was looking @ 160gr HORNADY Flex tip.
Should I just wait for the new Superformance powder
Well back in July I loaded up 40 rounds with the Hornady 160 gr. flex tip for my son and grandson.I used 29 grains of H4895 powder at 2100 FPS.Of course you are going to have to check and trim your cases to 2.029" to use this bullet.Good luck on the flex tip,I personaly like the Hornady 150 gr. round nose better.
I have used lots of IMR-4064 with 170 grain bullets in my 336w. 33.0 gr. with hornady brass easily matches factory 170 rem. core lokt velocity. Good luck with 160 FTX. I was able to match factory hornady velocity with no problem using H-4895. However accuracy is all over the place. I suspect the 336w will not stabilize this bullet. The marlin 336XLR has a longer barrel and a different twist rate. Tried IMR-4064 and H-4895 with various brands of brass as well as primers. No luck at all in the accuracy dept.
Maybe it's an Alabama thing (though I'm an Auburn guy - War Eagle!) but I've had excellent results from W748, as well. I've also had good results with Accurate 2520, IMR4895, and H4895, but I stick with 748 because it gives me good accuracy and velocity with the 150gr and 170gr bullets. I'm pretty sure any of these would work with the 160gr FTX. If you're worried about stabilizing them in your rifle, try a box of the LeverEvolution factory stuff to see. If they shoot in factory ammo, they'll shoot in handloads.
Yea, I agree with you dubyam. With the 160 it is time to try another powder. 748 sounds like a good idea. As for factory ammo, l,ve already shot up three boxes of the hornady loads. The results were not good at all. I,ve shot around 120ea handloads with simular poor results with accuracy. I was wondering about the fact that the 336w has a 1-10 twist as compared to the 336XLR with 1-12 twist may have somethimg to do with the whole thing. Not sure I,m correct about the twist thing. Will try another powder like you suggested. Sure would be nice to get the 160 to work. :?
