30-30 lever action loads

Guys,
I feel a bit foolish asking about pet loads for a 30-30, yeah, 30 gr of powder, but I am asking anyway. Here is the situation.

Hunting pigs, deer, and elk at short ranges. Short meaning 150 yds is a really long shot, and I expect to shoot around 100 yds.

Gun is a model '94 lever with open sights.

Needs:
Bullet and powder/primer recommendations. From the book, it looks like a really slow round, but i would rather load for it than buy, and I don't have a ton of time to work a new load. Since it is a tube, or I think it is, can I use ABs or BTs? I was thinking about protected points.

Yeah, I've been looking into loading for my '94. I'm going to try Varget with WLR primers. The problem is finding bullets. You CAN'T use AB or BT, you could ignite the other rounds in your tube. Nosler does make 170 grn partitions (at least I think they still do), but you more or less have to order them. I haven't been able to find any round nose bullets for the 30-30 on shelves any where. I generally like to have a local source over having to order bullets.

Another good option on bullets are the Flex Tip from Hornady.

You can order flat point or round nose bullets from any number of sources for the 30-30, or you can shop around and usually find them for not too much, unless you shop and Gouger Mountain for your handloading supplies.

I use 150gr Speer flat points and get good accuracy from them - around 1-1.2" all the time. If I were loading for hogs and knew I'd never shoot out past 150yds, I'd load any of the 170gr bullets from Speer, Hornady, or Nosler. The Partition is going to be a little added insurance on a hog's shoulder. I'd load them over Win748 or one of the 4895's or BL-C(2) or Accurate 2520 or Varget or RL15 if I had it. Really, anything in this range will do, and I've had good results out of almost all of these with 150 & 170gr bullets in my 30-30.

As has been said before, you can load the Hornady FTX bullet, but do not load any other pointed bullets into this gun's magazine unless you'd like to find out what a multiple discharge in the magazine will do to your hands, face, and torso. I have not handloaded the FTX, but I've shot some factory ammo with them. They are slower than advertised, by a wide margin, but nicely accurate at about 1" for five shots at 100yds.

We always loaded 150-170gr Spear flat nose over W748 or H4895 with good results.

I loaded for a Marlin 336 in 30-30 Win and I just tried the hunting loads listed in the 4th ed Sierra manual and they were spot on.

31.8 grs AA-2230, Rem. case and WW LRP, 150 Hornady RN bullet OAL was loaded to the center of the crimp groove I think it was 2.520.

For the 170 gr Sierra bullet it is 29.4 grs H322 with everything the same as above.

My cousin that I load this ammo for really liked the 150 gr load for deer.

Barrel Length : 20.0 inch or 508.0 mm

Man, I would bet the 30-30 with a 170gr Partition would be awesome elk medicine under 100 yards. Not that you need the Partition, but it would add a little extra insurance and probably be a very accurate load. Scotty

Shot some 160 horn FTX bullets today from my good ole marlin 336. The factory stuff blasted off at 2334 average for three rounds. 32.0 grains of H4895 gave a three shot average of 2360 in win. brass and primers. 3ea. with rem. brass and cci-200 primers got an average of 2292 with the same powder charge. Like fotis said these bullets are wonderfully accurate. Also the 170 sierra flat nose bullet went 2130 with 33.0 gr. of IMR-4064 in hornady brass and cci-200 primers. Factory 170 rem round nosers average about 2120. 34 grains of 4064 will really make the 170,s go but ya got to start low and work up. My vote is leaning toward those rubber tipped bullets.
