Has anyone on here tried any of the hornady 125 sst bullets? Was just curious if they where as accurate as the nos.125 Bt., or if they was as tough as the 125 AccuBond ?
I have used the 180 grain SST in my 30-06 and they shot well. As far as tough, I would not put them in the same class as the AccuBond. I personally feel they are more fragile than a B-tip.
The Hornady InterBond is the product that is equivalent to the Nosler AccuBond. The InterBond is a fine bullet, though I have had more success in developing accurate loads with AccuBonds. The SST is the equivalent of the Ballistic Tip. It is not a bonded core bullet, but rather a cup-and-core bullet, just as is the Ballistic Tip.
If you are just looking for paper tight groups, the SST's are on par with a dozen other tipped bullets, but if you are going to take a shot at flesh & bone I personally would look elsewhere. Take a tour through the "Bullet Test' thread and you'll find a lot of slipped cores.
Ballistic Tips have come a long way in the past few years, not that I ever had any issues with them, but some tried to really push the envelope with speed and then complain about less than superior results. Still, Nosler has seemed to step up and address the situation.
You only stated a .30 cal, but it really makes a difference if it's a 308Win, or a 300RUM.
I am using the 125BT this fall for my Lope/ M Deer hunt, out of a 308Win, and from what folks with Far more experience than I with this bullet......I have nothing but great expectations from it.
I have not personally used the 125 SST but from what I have read from those that have used them on deer size game mostly out of pistols like the Contenders they do really well. The SST is like the Ballistic tip in that you need to keep your impact velocity UNDER 3000 fps in my experience. I have used some SSTs in 150 gr out of a 308 rifle running them around 2700 fps muzzle and the 117 gr SST in a 25-06 muzzle around 3100 fps. They performed very well on deer. I have used the 125 Ballistic Tip, and still do, for years in all my 30 cal. stuff for deer. I just keep the impact under 3000 fps and man is it a drop them in their tracks killer. It really works best between impact velocity of 2000 and 2800 fps. I have killed in excess of 100 deer with the 125 Ballistic Tip.
