Well I finally got my long awaited Remington 700 CDL 300 Rum in hand. Gun looks great with only a couple of very small handling marks looks to have been fired only a couple of times as I was told.

If users past and present would not mind passing along load info for a 200 Partition and (I can't believe I'm saying this) a 200 AccuBond I would be very grateful.

Nice! I had one of those a few years back and it was quite a rifle. Didn't keep it long, but it looked good, handled well, shot accurately...

95 grains of Retumbo and the 200 gr Nosler AccuBond, or the Partition, or (ahem) the 200 gr Sierra Game King all worked well. That's a published load by Hodgdon. It scared me a little because - that's a LOT of gunpowder!

First ammo I ran through mine was factory loaded Remington, with the 200 gr Nosler Partition. Shocked me at 3190 fps! I had a couple of individual rounds break 3200 fps. Wow... Now, was the chronograph "off" ? Maybe. Whatever - they were powerful, and accurate.

Got a lot of recommendations to try 95 grains of Retumbo in my handloads with 200 grainers. Did so. Ended up around 3150 fps with good accuracy.

Federal 215 magnum/match primers.

Why'd I sell it? Muzzle blast and recoil were more than I cared for in a relatively light hunting rifle. I was impressed with how well the cushy Remington recoil pad absorbed the shock, but found it was simply more rifle than I needed or wanted.

I tolerate the recoil of my .375 H&H better...

Still - that is one heck of a cartridge, and the 700 CDL can be quite a rifle. Looking forward to your range reports!

Bill, that is a great looking CDL right there! I think Brian is running 94-95 grains of Retumbo with the 200 AB's and it runs at 3170 or so out of his Sendero. Pretty hot number.

Man, you have two premium elk slayers on deck now!

That looks like a pre X Mark trigger too.. My Whelen has the same coloration stock and is a great rifle. Way more beat up than that, but it shoots. I hope yours turns in some good shooting as well. What are you going to put on it for optics?

I'm not sure what I would put on it for scope. Truth be known I would rather sell it than scope it.

AAAAAAAHHHHHH! NNNNNOOOO! Don't give up on it before you even shoot it Bill. I bet that sucker will shoot. Both of my Rem 700 300 RUMs always shot well with RL-22, RL-25 or Retumbo and bullets between 180-200gr.

My current load for the Sendero is

200gr AB
95gr Retumbo
Nosler brass
Fed 215M
3.68"
3170 FPS

That's a half MOA load in the Sendero and shot in the .75 range with the SPS 700.

I have no doubt it will shoot the problem is that I don't really want or need it as my 8mm does all I want it to do.

Bill,

Very nice looking rifle you got.
Some things are worth waiting for.

Bill,
I have a Rem 700 gun that was a 7mm Mag, re-barreled to 300 RUM on a Shall 26" ported barrel.
I've shot a lot of powders with 180's and 200 AB Bullets.

Latest and best for my gun is 91.5 RL-25 200 AB using resized cases, yields close to 3060 fps.
I also tried 95.0 Retumbo with 200 AB and got 3200 fps but load was hot, wiped case heads. I'm sure I lose 50-75 fps due to the porting, My RL-25 load shoots very good groups.

If you research our site you will see some 300 RUM users have success with Retumbo while others equally with RL-25. It will all depend on what your gun likes etc.

For me and my particular gun, Retumbo hits peak very fast and seems more particular than RL-25.
Looking forward to your range results and outcome.

Don

Thanks for the load info guys. Right now I'm not sure if I will ever shoot it, but if I do, I will indeed try retumbo and RL-25 with the 200 accubonds or partitions.

I did not have it for long, but I worked up loads for the 300RUM in a Browning Stainless Stalker. I can look it up if you are interested. I did not think that I would ever need a heavier bullet with more penetration than the 180gr. GrandSlam, so that was what I loaded for. One kill. A 5x5 bull elk at 336 yards. I did not make the shot. The guy I was hunting with hit the bull with his 7mm Rem Mag but the bull did not go down. He jammed his action on the next round. I handed up my 300RUM and he took the bull down with one shot to the shoulder. Broke up both shoulders.
I just did not feel that I got enough extra MV with the 300RUM when compared to my 30-06. I tried a zillion different combinations, but as soon as I began to reach higher MV, the groups opened up. I hope that your mileage varies from my own. Mine is only anecdotal evidence, because I only had experience with that one rifle in 300RUM.

Nice looking rifle, Bill; and that is a nice dilemma you have facing you. You'll make the right choice, no doubt.

OK then turn it into a 8mm rum and sell the rest!

Bill, I have not seen many CDL s that didn't shoot well :)
I think you are going to enjoy owning that rifle.

Blessings,
Dan

H1000!!!!

All I got to say at 92g with the 200g AB. 3100fps and very very accurate from a 700 LSS.

Retumbo did not fare so well out of my rifle, but my buddys sendero sure loved 95g with the 200g AB.

Never tried any RL powders as I don't particularly care for them as much as the hodgon extreme line. I find I can get something to shoot with either H1000 or retumbo.

300 RUM is a good one with 200g AB and the 210 target bullets...wore the barrel out on mine and rebarreled to the 338 EDGE next go round...

But like you say, its probly not going to do anything your 8 mag won't for hunting purposes, but at LR there's no good 8mm bullets to keep up at 1K that I know of anyways like the .6 BCs you can get with heavier 30 cals...

I'm curious as to why you bought it?

Thought I wanted a 300 rum it but it does not offer enough over my 8mm (IMO) to warrant keeping it. Who knows maybe I will keep it and do something with it some days.

Congrats on a fine rifle in a fine caliber. I use the 180 Accubonds at 3330 fps. I've shot 2 deer with it. One under 50 yards. I had no problem with blood shot meat with the behind the shoulder lung/heart shot beyond what a 308 win would have done. The key has been the AccuBond. I don't use partitions because the front end blows up and destroys a lot of meat in my experiences. The AccuBond opens in a more controlled fashion and penetrates deep. The 300 RUM is a great open country mule deer or elk cartridge also for obvious reasons. I save the 200 gr bullets for the 325WSM . Great Buy
