300 RUM vs 30-378 Weatherby

I know this will spark some controversy but I want to really know the truth.
What really is the difference between these two great cartridges? I have a 300 RUM, shoots 3372-3380 in an 180AB, 26 inch tube that has a ported barrel.
I have seen other blogs where a guy loads for a 300 RUM and reports using a 28" barrel getting 3520 from a 180 TSX. From what I gather in some loading manuals when comparing the two cartridges using the same length barrel and same bullet weight I see little difference in velocity. Is Weatherby dependent on the 28" tube to produce higher velocities listed ? I know if there is an edge to Weatherby it takes a lot of powder to make that happen. It just tickles my curiosity!

If they have a 28" barrel on a 300RUM, it's a custom barrel and I would believe the extra velocity from those two inches. I was under the impression that the 30-378 was the king of the 30 cals anyway but not by much. I'm pushing a 200AB from my factory 300RUM at 3137, at sub-moa and am very happy with that. You are also correct in that the 30-378 requires more powder, say Retumbo, than the 300RUM.

Don, yes the factory 30-378Wby has a 28" long barrel and the Wby freebore. Barnes and Nosler both used 26" long barrel for the Wby Speer used a 24" long barrel and Hornady used a factory rifle with max velocity 3300fps same as the data for the 300RUM for max velocity.

I've sold both my factory 30-378Wby and 300RUM comparing those two the Wby was faster and really at what point does the extra powder used for the Wby really matter when you look at the cost of those cases if you owned the Wby.

Wyatt making magazine boxes for both Win/Rem that let you get OAL lenght out to 3.825" and that helps with the RUM or 7STW you get to seat the bullet further out. You add that and 28" barrel depending on twist you can get to the Wby velocity with no problem.

I have a 30-378 bee. i can push a 200 grain AccuBond at 3300. I would not hesitate to buy either gun both will get the job done basically it comes down to what you prefer. For me I was in the right place at the right time when they put the clearance sticker on the gun for 800.00. And the store manager telling me there is no use for a gun like this in North America! I found a use for it!

You can't go wrong with either one!!!!

I like the way you think LK! Scotty

I had the 30-378 and I got about 3450 fps with the 180 gr. AccuBond. the barrel was 26" plus 2" of muzzlebrake and accurate as could be but heavy for toting in the Rockies after elk. I bought a 300 RUM and get 3333fps with the same 180gr. AB and same 26" plus 2"muzzlebrake barrel. It's not as accurate but it will shoot MOA out to the 500 yards I limit myself to for elk. The 30-338 weighed 10.5 lbs unloaded. The 300 RUM weighs 8.5 lbs. It's a trade off. As much as I love my RUMs that Accumark was the most impressive looking and shooting rifle I've ever owned.
