What do you all think of using the 125gn BT in a 300 Savage. I've tried the 150AB, but man that bullet has to be seated deep. I've also considered the 150PT. This is an original Savage Model 99, so I have the rotary mag.

What are your thoughts?

I have used the 125 bt and the 150 SP Hornady. Works great with either!

Guys on another forum indicate that a standard cup and core bullet will work fine... when I start loading for my new-to-me Savage 99 I will probably be trying bullets out of red and yellow boxes. The .300 Savage is by no stretch of the imagination a long range cartridge, and the velocities it produces are not that spectacular, so I think that Partitions will not be necessary. Of the Nosler 150 gr bullets, the Partition would be my first choice.

Rich,

The 125 gr BT would work well in the 300 Savage for deer sized game.

I had a couple boxes of Remington 150 gr SPCL bullets that I sent off to a friend to load in his M700 Classic in 300 Savage. If you could fine some, they would be a great bullet. The recovered bullets were actually shot out of my 30-06 a few years back. They held together very well.

BTW, by buddy shot a Black tail with one of these bullets last year from his 300 Savage.

I shot my very first big game animal (a CA hog) with this rifle in November 2002. It's a hand-me down. It started out being my Grandfather's, then it was given to my Dad, and then I asked for it cause I wanted to start hunting. I ran the serial number of the rifle and came up with a build date in the 1950s, I don't remember the exact year. Here's the gun I'll never give up:

I got this box of ammo with it, which I believe is older than I am and I'll be 40 in April.

If you haven't noticed I love the old stuff. And that is one cool gun! and box. 8)

Beautiful rifle. The 300 Savage and Savage 99 is a classic big game combo. Both are popular in Michigan's UP! When someone says 300, they mean Savage, not Magnum.

I have a friend who has a 250-3000 in that particular configuration. I hope that someday after enough begging I'll get it someday. it works when someone begs me for something long enough.

I pondering the idea of puuting a scope on it. Much easier to work up a load, then return it to open sights.

Go with the classic, Weaver K4 w/ Post reticle.

JD, you like old stuff? Check this out. I was digging through some boxes, getting ready for an upcoming move, and found this stuff. Didn't even know I had it.

Thats neat! I think the only thing I have is an old cardboard 10ga shotgunshell, and about 4 16 ga cardboard deer slugs.

Use the 125grNBT in your Savage. I use that bullet in my 308x1.5 Barnes and 300Savage bolt gun without any problems.Rick.

That box looks just like the ones I have, oh wait they are the same. They did an outstanding job on the BT buck and can't wait to do it again this season. Everyone should own a 300 savage.

I have one of these 1953 model EG 99's and it is a real shooter with RL15 and 165 flat base speers. The 125 bt's are interesing for plinking, what powder and how much, groups ???

I'm using the Hornadt 130 grain SP in my Model 99 (manufactured in 1941) in 300 Savage. I'm getting 3/4" three shot groups with 43.5 grains of Varget Winchester WLR primers. This load Chronos at 2780 fps.
